Breakdown: Rampart ran its win streak to six on Saturday with a come-from-behind win against Pueblo West and later played Montrose on Monday before finishing its home tournament Tuesday against Roosevelt. On Thursday, Liberty plays 4A upstart Pueblo South, which has won seven straight after an 0-2 start. . 4A enters league play this week, so start your engines in the PPAC as the eight teams that went a combined 42-19 (.689) start meeting head to head. Air Academy hosts Falcon (7-2) on Tuesday before meeting Cheyenne Mountain, also at home, on Friday. The Metro League is just 14-46. Watch out for Mesa Ridge, though, despite its 3-6 mark. The Grizzlies dropped a close one to Heritage, 52-49 on Saturday, a team that beat Fountain-Fort Carson in last season's 5A playoffs. . St. Mary's will put its undefeated mark on the line Friday against Ellicott and possibly Saturday at James Irwin (3-2).

Breakdown: Could Castle View take a bite out of the Pikes Peak region's top two 5A teams? On Tuesday, the Sabercats (7-1) travel to Rampart before playing host to Pine Creek on Friday. . 4A PPAC play starts with Sand Creek at Palmer Ridge, quickly becoming one of the area's best matchups. Last year, both games could have gone either way, but Sand Creek escaped with wins of five and 10 points. After traveling to 6-2 Legend on Tuesday, Mesa Ridge begins defense of its Metro League title at home Thursday against Harrison. The Grizzlies went 14-0 in league play last season en route to a 23-0 regular season. . TCA, one of only six remaining undefeated squads in 3A, is led by a suffocating defense averaging a mere 28 points against. . Last season, Peyton suffered losses of 19 and 38 points to 2A power Lutheran. On Saturday, the Panthers nearly turned the tables but fell to the Lions on a last-second basket, 64-63.

 

HOCKEY

Breakdown: Heading into Monday's busy night (Doherty, Coronado, Air Academy, Liberty and Rampart were all in action), the Rangers sat atop the conference with eight league points. The Rangers ease back onto the ice with only three games between now and Jan. 24. After that it's a seven-game stretch to close the season in a span of 18 days. ... Doherty had yet to register any points in conference, with only one game played, but was on its way to a win over Coronado on Monday. The Spartans get Cheyenne Mountain (nonleague) Thursday and travel to Valor Chr. on Saturday. ... The Kadets make their debut here. The team is 2-0 in conference, locking up four early points. They'll get a tough league test from Palmer on Wednesday before paying a nonleague visit to Lewis-Palmer on Friday.
