Breakdown: Let the 5A CSML roller coaster begin: last week's hot team, Pine Creek, went 0-2, including a league-opening setback to Palmer. This week, Rampart opens up the CSML season at home against Palmer on Tuesday, then hosts Doherty on Friday. Let's not forget about four-time reigning league champ Fountain-Fort Carson, ready to start fresh after going 4-9 in nonleague action. The Trojans face Liberty and Pine Creek this week. ... Sand Creek takes a five-game winning streak into this week's play; no other PPAC team has won more than two straight, the product of a meat grinder of a league with a variety of contrasting styles. Mesa Ridge (8-6) is the only 4A Metro League team with a winning record, and has reeled off five straight after dropping six of its first nine, all by single digits. . One day after dropping its first league game, Ellicott bounced back by snapping an eight-year, 14-game losing streak to La Junta. While St. Mary's and Ellicott pace the Tri-Peaks East with 5-1 marks, CSCS owns the only undefeated mark to lead the West at 3-0. Looking ahead, St. Mary's plays at CSCS on Jan. 27 in a makeup game that was postponed Dec. 6 due to subfreezing weather, aka "Polar Vortex." ... Peyton, 1-0 in league play, has a big week ahead. On Wednesday, the Panthers travel to Simla (8-1, 2-0), then play host to Kiowa (4-2, 1-0) on Thursday.

Breakdown: Pine Creek edged Palmer, 46-45 on Saturday to open 5A CSML play and meets Doherty on Tuesday. Palmer, which has won or shared the last three league crowns, hosts upstart Rampart on Tuesday in a series in which Palmer has won the past eight. ... This week's 4A key PPAC game takes place on Friday, when Sand Creek travels to Falcon. Both teams should sport 5-0 league marks heading into that game. Palmer Ridge, meanwhile, is 4-1 and takes a break from league play this weekend with its annual trip to the Orange and Black Classic in Colby, Kan. Looking way ahead, Mesa Ridge travels to Glenwood Springs (11-0) on Feb. 15. But long before that, the Grizzlies will hit the road to face future league opponent Canon City (7-5) on Wednesday. ... TCA had its eight-game winning streak snapped in a nonleague loss at Peak to Peak. The Titans have little time to sulk with a key league clash at Manitou Springs on Tuesday. Both teams are 3-0 in the Tri-Peaks West. St. Mary's suffered a 48-45 loss at Trinidad last week for its first loss in East league play, then have a road trip to 11-0 Lamar on Friday. ... Peyton travels to undefeated Simla (10-0) on Wednesday in a game featuring a pair of teams that qualified for the 2A state tournament in Pueblo last spring. Both appear headed on the right track to be among the top eight again at Massari Arena in March.

Breakdown: Lewis-Palmer and Mountain Vista continue on their collision course for a league title (Feb. 14, L-P's last regular-season game). But Bishop Machebeuf is tied with both teams for the league lead. It has three losses, while both MV and L-P only have one. ... Doherty's loss last week was an 8-1 setback by Bishop Machebeuf. ... Palmer moves back on the list after going 2-0 last week and climbing to a fifth-place tie in the league standings. The Terrors face Mountain Vista and Doherty this week.
