2A & Below

1. Peyton 6-2 No. 1

2. Pikes Peak Chr. 4-4 No. 2

3. Colorado Springs School 2-3 No. 3

Breakdown: Last year, Pine Creek didn't get hot until starting 0-2 in league play. On Saturday, the Eagles will open the 5A Metro League season at Palmer riding a five-game winning streak. While Pine Creek is off until Saturday, the other five league squads play nonleague foes, highlighted by Liberty at Mountain Vista (10-1) on Tuesday. . While Sand Creek hosts Air Academy on Friday, neither can look ahead. Both have tall tests on Tuesday, when the Scorpions play Cheyenne Mountain while Air Academy travels to Palmer Ridge, which is flying high after beating Lewis-Palmer for the first time ever on Friday. And Cheyenne Mountain scored only 39 points in Friday's loss at Air Academy, so the Indians certainly will be looking to rebound. . Comeback boys' team of the year? Ellicott, hands down. With one more victory, the Thunderhawks will match their win total from the previous four seasons (4-16, 2-17, 2-17 and 0-19). According to the stats on Maxpreps, the last six-win season took place in 2005-06.

In 4A, Sand Creek and Mesa Ridge both continued their winning ways and neither has lost a league game in 16 tries dating back to last season. Not listed among the area's best, but should warrant some watching, is Falcon. At 5-5, the Falcons sport six new players under coach Rick Susek. However, with wins over Air Academy and Discovery Canyon, Falcon is the only other PPAC team besides Sand Creek with a 2-0 start. . All three of the area's 3A top teams won twice last week. Manitou Springs entered the week as the Tri-Peak West's only 2-0 team. The Mustangs meet TCA on Jan. 21. . Peyton and Vanguard continue to roll, sporting identical 8-1 records. Colorado Springs School lost a tough two-point decision to 3A Salida on Saturday, and the Kodiaks return to league play with a road game at Vanguard on Friday.
