This week's Gazette Preps high school sports rankings

BASEBALL

Team Record Last Week

5A

1. Pine Creek 11-4 No. 1

2. Doherty 8-8 NR

3. Fountain-Fort Carson 7-10 No. 2

4A

1. Lewis-Palmer 14-3 No. 1

2. Mesa Ridge 13-4 No. 3

3. Palmer Ridge 11-6 No. 2

3A and below

1. The Classical Academy 13-3 No. 1

2. St. Mary's 11-4 No. 2

3. Peyton 13-2 No. 3

Breakdown: Pine Creek is surging at the right time, taking an eight-game winning streak into the final week of the league season. Despite that run, the Eagles lead Doherty by just one game in the CSML standings, and Saturday's makeup game at Doherty could decide the league title. Don't count out Fountain-Fort Carson and Palmer, just one game back in the loss column ... Speaking of streaks, Lewis-Palmer won its 11th straight. The Rangers have not lost to a team from Colorado this season. ... TCA and Lamar will serve as top seeds as the Tri-Peaks crossover tournament commences later this week. Manitou Springs and St. Mary's finished second in the West and East divisions, respectively. Peyton (7-1 in league) travels to Calhan (6-2) for a key doubleheader Tuesday. The Panthers can still catch league-leading Kiowa (9-1 in Black Forest League play).

GIRLS' SOCCER

Team Record Last Week

5A

1. Pine Creek 11-1-1 No. 1

2. Liberty 10-3-1 No. 2

3. Doherty 6-6 No. 3

4A

1. Cheyenne Mountain 11-0-2 No. 1

2. Lewis-Palmer 9-2-3 No. 2

3. Palmer Ridge 7-4-1 No. 3

3A

1. St. Mary's 12-1 No. 2

2. The Classical Academy 7-6 NR

3. Manitou Springs 10-4 No. 3

Breakdown: Liberty did it again, earning a draw against Pine Creek in the two teams' head-to-head league matchup. It was the second consecutive season the two teams tied. Last year's resulted in a league split. They're headed that way again, but Doherty could have something to say about it when it travels to Liberty on Wednesday. ... Palmer Ridge's only league loss came to Liberty. The Bears can show how much they've grown since that April 8, 1-0 loss when they host Cheyenne Mountain on Tuesday. Palmer Ridge can force a three-way tie for first place (assuming Lewis-Palmer wins Tuesday) with a victory, which could dilute playoff rankings for Pikes Peak Athletic Conference teams. ... St. Mary's went out and took care of business against Fountain Valley (in overtime, no less) to win the region title. The Gazette's March 17 prep rankings pointed out that TCA was falling out of the ranks after a 0-3 start, but to expect the Titans to return. Well, here they are, just in time for playoffs and with a region title to show off.
