Not many can match the credentials recorded by Discovery Canyon wrestling coach Ron Sukle in just seven seasons since the northeastern Colorado Springs school opened its doors.
Through it all, however, he's quick to deflect any personal success to the ones actually on the mat.
"As coaches, we get our guys to perform to wrestle their best, but they're the ones wrestling hard, and good things have happened," Sukle said. "If we do that, whatever happens in the end, we've done our jobs as coaches. Over the years, they've risen to the occasion."
For the fifth season in a row, Sukle watched one of his competitors stand on top of the podium at the state wrestling tournament when Sam Turner won the crown at 120 pounds. In addition, three Discovery Canyon wrestlers placed as the Thunder finished sixth out of 52 schools in the final 4A team standings.
Along with the school's athletic success of top-tier wrestlers, Discovery Canyon also has sent a number of alumni to college programs.
When Tyler Oberg and David Traynor signed national letters of intent to Princeton and Western State, respectively, it marked the fourth straight year at least one Thunder wrestler had earned a scholarship.
