In one of the biggest turnarounds in the state, Lewis-Palmer wiped away years of middling success with a league title and its first playoff berth since 2009.

The Rangers went 8-0 in the 5A Jeffco League and 14-2 overall.

Their most successful season in years came to an abrupt halt in a 9-8 loss to Chaparral in the first round of the state playoffs.

"This year (they) took a great step forward in believing in themselves and what they're capable of," said L-P coach Dan Mullins, The Gazette Boys' Lacrosse Coach of the Year. "The next step is now to build on top of that and make a deep run for a state championship.

"That's always been the goal, but before this season it's been kind of unrealistic. We didn't talk about it much."

Mullins took over a program in need of rebuilding in 2014 and went 19-26 over his first three years in charge. This year, the Rangers won 14 straight, earning the eighth seed and a home game in the playoffs.

Going into next year, the Rangers will lose 13 seniors.

"Overall, the season I thought was a big success," Mullins said. "The program has come to a head, where we thought it could be."
