An email sent to the Teller County Sheriff's Office Monday claiming several bombs had been placed in the courthouse in Cripple Creek overnight prompted the evacuation of the county government and every building in a two-block radius, said Teller County Sheriff Mike Ensminger.

"We received an email claiming there were a number of explosive devices in the county courthouse, so we immediately closed down and evacuated the courthouse, as well as a two-block radius around it," Ensminger said. "The courthouse will remain closed for the rest of the day, but all other businesses and streets are open."

The two-block area near the courthouse was cordoned off and evacuated at 10 a.m. The Colorado Springs police explosives unit searched inside and outside the building, but found no bombs, Ensminger said.

The evacuation order was lifted shortly after 1 p.m. and utilities crews were going through the courthouse to ensure nothing was amiss.

"We would rather err on the side of caution," Ensminger said.

The Teller County courthouse is scheduled to reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
