Take a 'shot' at Bad Juju, where not one thing is bad

Juice and smoothie fans, get excited. The west side now has a quirky health oasis. In addition to assorted fresh juices, smoothies and food perfect for breakfast or lunch, you might stumble upon a midday yoga class featuring a kombucha tasting or an afternoon concert. And after hours - for the 21-plus crowd - an artist meet-up or '90s dance party with organic mixed drinks could be in full force.

Welcome to Bad Juju Juice Bar and Eatery in Old Colorado City.

Yoga, concerts and meet-ups aside, you can expect daily eats that are extremely vegan and vegetarian friendly - with only one meat-based entrée on the regular menu. But, as always, this is a vegan review, so let's talk plants.

The Wake Up juice ($6.95) seemed just right - blood red and perfectly sweet. The carrot, beet, apple and orange juice is packed with nutrients and easy on the belly of a newbie juicer.

Be sure to check out the specials, though, as they might have a "shot" that appeals. For me it was the Glow ($4) - mouth-puckeringly sweet aloe and apple juice. On my next visit, I opted for the current darling at most juice bars: the Acaí (ah-sah-ee) bowl ($9.50). In the U.S., the superfood berry is most often found in puree form in the frozen section of health-leaning grocery stores. At Bad Juju, their generous smoothie in a bowl features what one would expect: fresh berries and granola. But the peanut butter bowl is my favorite. That dollop of protein beefs it up to a stick-to-your-ribs meal.

Many vegan solid food items are available, too. The soyrizo potato tacos ($9) - with soybean rather than pork sausage - deliver spicy copper color wrapped in gluten-free tortillas. Avocado slices provide a creamy texture and cooling element to each bite. Aromatic saffron rice rounds out the meal. For a surprisingly tasty dish, try the spaghetti squash ($9). People have been pushing this stringy vegetable as a pasta alternative for years, and I'm not always keen on it. But at Bad Juju, they wisely bulk up the house-made pasta sauce with vegetables and soy-based meatless crumbles. A subtle sweetness to the herb-filled sauce works, clinging to the "spaghetti." With any lunch option, you can add a juice for $4.

Other noteworthy menu items include vegan oatmeal ($5), salad ($5) and standard drinks such as coffee ($4), tea ($3.50) and even bottled Coke ($2.50).

Bright and cheery, this sweet little joint in Old Colorado City offers colorful and fresh plant-based juices, smoothies and meals that are good for you. And just plain good. There's not one bad thing about Bad Juju Juice Bar and Eatery.
