Take 10: Paul Ogata promises comic performance like a 'boisterous tent revival'

Magic comedy moments that capture lightning in a bottle - that's how our featured live Take 10 performer describes what you will see on Friday, Dec.15 during the noon hour on the Gazette News Facebook platform.

Paul Ogata plans his jokes beforehand but also waits for those situations with the audience where he can zig instead of zag during a performance.

"Expect the unexpected. So let me just say it will be like a boisterous tent revival and miraculous faith healing, but with inappropriate jokes," he said.

Ogata recalled when he told his family in Hawaii that he wanted to be a comedian, "I remember my dad once told me 'you need a vocation, comedy is just an avocation.'"

Ogata says his Japanese-American family tried to funnel him into what they perceived to be the "right" careers, such as being an attorney like his mother or becoming an engineer or accountant. Ogata qualified to go to law school in Hawaii but chose comedy instead. He'd been working as a morning radio host for almost eight years in Honolulu, and eventually was able to headline at a Waikiki showroom one summer.

"So the shift to full-time comedy wasn't a sucker-punch for them. Nowadays, my parents come to shows when I'm back home in Hawaii or when I'm in Las Vegas and they have a blast," he said.

One magic moment for him happened at a sold out concert in Hawaii a year after he became a full-time comedian.

"My parents were in the audience and I did a joke about when I was growing up and my father never said that he loved me or that he was proud of me," he said. "The next night at my parents' house at dinner, my mom dragged my dad over by the arm and said he has something to say to me. He let out a sigh and said 'I love you and I am proud of you.'"

Ogata said although it was sort of forced, it was the best thing to ever come out of comedy for him.

Earlier this year, Ogata did a half-hour performance on Comedy Central Asia and now has set his sights on Netflix or HBO.

You can see Ogata perform his comedy live on our Dec. 15 Take 10 performance.
