TABLE TALK: Colorado Springs independently owned deli celebrates 30 years of thriving business

It's not every day that a neighborhood eatery can make it for the long haul. That's why we have to give a shout out to Mike and Betsy Oliver, owners of Oliver's Delicatessen, 6602 Delmonico Drive, who opened their business in 1983. Yes, you counted correctly. That's 30 years and they are still going strong.

"We use our family recipes and make everything fresh," Betsy said.

Green light

Bobby Couch, former executive sous chef at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, has opened Green Line Grill, 2301/2 Pueblo Ave., next door to the Zodiac Venue & Bar. The spot has been the home to several eateries, but Couch may have what it takes to make this a go-to for well prepared, tasty food. The menu is small, starting with his El Reno-style Fried Onion Burger ($4.75). Couch forms a hunk of ground beef from Andy's Meat Market into a round patty. That is placed on a pile of sauteed onions on a flat-top griddle and smashed. I ordered my burger with the works: topped with beef chili, cheese, lettuce and tomato. It was mighty fine. What Couch is really know for is his Coney's, a hot dog topped with his El Reno slaw ($4.00). The relish is a several-day process of fermenting cabbage until it turns a neon yellow color with a sweet flavor and mustardy twang. Hours are 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays; and 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Call 310-0175. Visit the Green Line Grill on Facebook.

Puerto Rican landing

The former El Nopal, 2600 Platte Place, has become Mi Viejo San Juan, where owner and chef Maria Rios knows her way around the Puerto Rican kitchen. The menu features the classics: rice with green pigeon peas, yucca, tostones (green banana plantains), pork and chicken dishes. The emapanadas are two huge fried pastry pillows filled with spicy meatloaf. Everything is made when the order hits the pass-through and comes to the table piping hot. Rest is bliss

Michelle Asher and Mike Buzzell, owners of Bliss Bakery, 818 Village Center Drive, are closing their storefront. "I'm worn out," Asher said, "and going to take a few months off." She will do special orders and Buzzell will continue making his famous whoopie pies out of a commercial kitchen. They will be at the store until the end of the month. Call 599-4411.
