Suspected car thief tries to steal car without key

A Colorado Springs man was arrested Tuesday after police said he tried to flee in a stolen minivan, then tried to steal a second vehicle that had no key in its ignition.

Eric Ryan Rotureau, 32, was arrested on suspicion of motor vehicle theft, attempted motor vehicle theft and several traffic violations. He was booked into the El Paso County jail and held on a $50,000 bond, court records show.

At about 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, police tried to stop a light blue minivan making an illegal u-turn near Fountain Boulevard and Shasta Drive, when its driver, identified as Rotureau, suddenly made another u-turn, drove through a field and entered an intersection, breaking several traffic laws, police said.

Officers chased Rotureau as he tried to get away. Police said he drove south on Circle Drive from Verde Drive, went over the median and abandoned the minivan at Arlington Drive. He then allegedly ran to a nearby gas station and tried to steal a car at a gas pump, but the key was not in the ignition and he took off on foot again.

Police caught up to Rotureau in a business nearby and took him into custody without incident.
