Suspect arrested after standoff at Colorado Springs apartment

Colorado Springs police arrested a man early Thursday morning after he barricaded himself in an apartment in southeast Colorado Springs.

James Ferrell, 29, was wanted on felony burglary and trespassing charges, according to police.

Police first tried to arrest Ferrell about 6 p.m. Wednesday, but he barricaded himself in an apartment for about seven hours. Ferrell was forced out of an attic space after police introduced chemical agents into the apartment. He was arrested shortly before 1 a.m.

The SWAT team and Colorado Springs officers are on scene responding to a barricaded suspect situation near Monterey Road and Del Mar Drive in southeast Colorado Springs.

The current incident began with a  call for service about a domestic dispute that came in about 5:18 p.m., police said. Officers arrived to check the area for the involved party, who had barricaded himself inside an apartment building,

Police began evacuating the building around 6:30 PM.

They started with announcements to try to get the man and, and when that didn't work, began using rounds of tear gas.

Police and SWAT are currently still on scene and have several roads blocked off near Monterey Road and Carmel Drive.
