Super Bowl party for Fort Carson troops offers beer pong, without beer

Fort Carson soldiers in Camp Buehring, Kuwait, will get a big Super Bowl party that includes beer-free beer pong.

The twist on the timeless drinking game comes courtesy of the USO and Central Command’s decade-old General Order No. 1, which forbids boozing in Middle Eastern nations where alcohol is forbidden. Alcohol is illegal in Kuwait.

A recent article in the English-language Kuwait Times said bootleg liquor was running between $300 and $500 per bottle for New Year’s revelers there.

But alcohol free beverages, including some that look like beer, are perfectly fine.

The Army makes the concoctions including Sharp’s and O’Doul’s available to thirsty troops. After few months overseas, some soldiers swear they can  get a buzz from the beer-free beer.

The USO office at Buehring is doing its best to keep troops entertained in the dry environment. The January events calendar at the desert base includes poker, trivia contests and athletic events — all sans alcohol.

Buehring is home to troops from Fort Carson’s 2nd Brigade Combat team who began work there this fall to train local troops though the Middle East while flying the American flag.

Still waiting on word from Afghanistan for details on 4th Infantry Division’s Super Bowl party plans in Kandahar. Beer-free keg stands anyone?
