Strong winds in town, weather advisory issued for mountains

UPDATED 2:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory through 5 p.m. Monday for the mountains.

Forecasters say travelers can expect heavy snow and strong winds of up to 60 mph that will create hazardous driving conditions on roads already packed with snow and ice.

Snowfall through Monday could total up to 20 inches, the heaviest accumulation is expected west of the Continental Divide.

Windy weather in the Pikes Peak region

Winds will howl again Sunday in the Pikes Peak region, but they're blowing in more of the same sunny and mild weather, forecasters with the National Weather Service predict.

Calm weather was expected Saturday with highs in the 50s and 10 mph breezes. But on Sunday, gusts were expected to hit 40 mph, said Mike Nosko with the Weather Service office in Pueblo.

"By Sunday afternoon it should be blowing pretty good," Nosko said.

Apart from the gusty winds, locals can expect a week of calm weather, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s. Nosko said no serious weather systems were in the forecast through next Friday.

The downside of good weather is the lack of moisture. Since Dec. 1, Colorado Springs has seen a quarter inch of precipitation, well below the 0.44-inch average for that time period.
