Stein Mart, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based discount apparel and home fashion retailer, will open at its new location Thursday at University Village Colorado, the latest addition to the fast-growing North Nevada Avenue shopping center.
The 32,000-square-foot store will be slightly smaller than Stein Mart's old location at the Market at Chapel Hills West shopping center on North Academy Boulevard, which the retailer closed on Aug. 28.
Stein Mart gives University Village another brand name to go with anchors Costco Wholesale Club, Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse and Kohl's department store. University Village also is home to several smaller retailers and sit-down and fast-casual restaurants, including Hacienda Colorado, Bonefish Grill and Tokyo Joe's.
"Our goal has always been to have a very strong clothing contingent there and to have that second, soft goods retailer, department store retailer" to go with Kohl's, said Colorado Springs developer Kevin Kratt, whose Kratt Commercial Properties developed University Village.
Stein Mart officials said last year they were moving their 17-year-old store because they had reached the end of their lease on North Academy, and liked the idea of being in a new development.
The new store will employ about 40 people - the same as before, said Stein Mart spokeswoman Linda Tasseff. All employees from the old location transferred to the new store, she said.
Stein Mart has no plans for additional stores in the Springs, she added.
The Stein Mart store was constructed as a free-standing building on the north end of University Village, northwest of Nevada and Garden of the Gods Road. Eventually, another 50,000 to 60,000 square feet of retail space will be constructed adjacent to the store, Kratt said.
University Village, which will be about 650,000 square feet when finished, opened in October 2009 and is a centerpiece of an urban renewal project along North Nevada.
