"A Steady Rain" is theater stripped down to its bare minimum. There's no fancy set here - and only a two-person cast. It's the barest show Springs Ensemble Theatre has produced, says Steve Emily, SET president and one of the show's stars.
"Our last handful of shows have been big sets and costumes," Emily says, "but we thought what if we got rid of all that stuff we hide behind and have two actors, a table and two chairs and see what happens."
Keith Huff's 2007 play doesn't need all the bells and whistles. In it, two Chicago cops, who have been friends most of their lives, make a life-altering choice one dark and rainy night, which puts their friendship and careers on the line.
"It takes what on paper looks to be somewhat familiar - good cop, bad cop - but early on, you realize these guys aren't so black and white," Emily says. "There's gray here."
