Workers in El Paso and Teller counties on average earned less than employees nationwide in May 2012, according to a release from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The BLS said workers from the two counties, which constitute the Colorado Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area, earned an average hourly wage of $21.83, compared with the national average of $22.01.

The survey gathers wage estimates for workers in 22 major occupational groups and more than 450 detailed occupations in the Springs metropolitan area.

Among the survey's findings:

- Compared to the nationwide distribution, area jobs were most concentrated in seven of the 22 major groups, including computer and mathematical positions, business and financial operations, food preparation and serving-related jobs.

- Local wages were significantly higher than their respective national averages in the computer and mathematical fields. The Colorado Springs region had 13,280 computer, mathematical and accounting jobs in May 2012 totaling 5.5 percent of area employment, the report states. Workers in those two fields earned a mean hourly wage of $40.20; the national mean wage was $38.55.

- Software and application developers made up one of the largest single occupations within the area with 2,770 computer jobs. Among the higher paying jobs in the area were systems software developers and operations research analysts, who earned a mean hourly wage of $50.47 and $48.05, respectively.

- Workers in the area employed in legal, management, arts, design, entertainment, sports and media fields earned "significantly lower wages" than the national average, the report states.

- Local wages for the major occupational groups ranged from $10.10 per hour in food preparation and serving related jobs to $49.25 in management occupations.

In the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield area, workers had an average hourly wage of $24.50 in May 2012.
