Spring runoff produces big wave on Colorado River

Associated Press Updated: June 3, 2014 at 4:51 pm 0

GRAND JUNCTION — The abundant spring runoff is creating a wave known as "Big Sur" in the Colorado River, drawing kayakers and paddle boarders to DeBeque Canyon.

The Daily Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1ot3fe4 ) reports that the wave develops when water flows over a submerged bridge, reaching at least 20,000 cubic feet per second. Flows have been reaching around 26,000 cubic feet this week.

People in the water have to keep an eye out for debris floating down the roaring river, including entire cottonwood trees and telephone poles.

The last time the wave appeared was in 2011.
