The pilot and passenger aboard a small plane escaped injury Saturday afternoon when their Glassair II veered off a runway, hit a culvert and burst into flames while taking off at Meadow Lake Airport in Falcon, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office reported.

Firefighters extinguished the fire.

The cause may have been a sudden severe wind gust around 1 p.m. from an approaching storm, but no further investigation is planned.
