El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputies are on the lookout for a man they say smashed a jewelry display case at a K-Mart store and stole thousands of dollars in merchandise Tuesday.

The man entered the K-Mart on Palmer Park Boulevard and Powers Boulevard shortly before 7:30 p.m. and surveillance footage showed him going straight to the jewelry counter, then using a sledgehammer to break into the display, spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said.

Several people called 9-1-1 to report the crime, but the thief got away with thousands of dollars in jewelry before deputies arrived.

The man's face was concealed with an orange bandana and could be connected to a late 90s white Chevy or GMC four-door S-10 style Blazer.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 390-5555.
