Sky Sox tie franchise mark with 4 triples on way to 8-3 win over Tacoma

One thing Colorado Springs does not need to worry about is its hitting, especially for extra bases.

The Sky Sox connected on four triples, two by Ben Paulsen, to match a franchise single-game record (1991, 1998 and 2003) to cruise to a 8-3 victory over Tacoma. The hosts added two doubles and a homer for seven extra-base knocks out of 14 hits.

The Friday win before 8,361 at Security Service Field gave the hosts the series 3-1, and moved the Sky Sox to 1.5 games of the Rainiers (44-32) after starting the homestand 3.5 back in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Northern Division.

"Winning this is huge for us," Paulsen said. "This gives us a lot of confidence going on the road."

A triple to lead off the fourth by Paulsen led to one run and his second in the fifth made it 5-2. The Sky Sox (41-32) pace professional baseball with 51 triples, which includes individual pro leader Corey Dickerson (13) who was called up to the Rockies before Friday's game.

Colorado Springs scored three runs in the sixth for a 8-2 advantage.

Greg Golson stole his third base of the game and advanced to third on a passed ball before an RBI double by Lars Davis scored him. Davis scored after a home run to center by Charlie Culberson (12).

Colorado Springs connected for two triples (Culberson, Charlie Blackmon) to take a 2-0 lead in the first. According to Blackmon, the Sky Sox can thank the dimensions of their ballpark (410 feet to center, 385 in the gaps and 350 at each foul pole) for their knack for triples.

"This ballpark is so huge that if you hit into the gap, if you have any speed at all, you have a chance at getting three," he said..

The extra-base hits were more than enough thanks for starter Drew Pomeranz (8-1), who threw 64 strikes out of 95 pitches.

"I think of him as a stopper," Paulsen said. "It's exciting to have him out there because he always gives us a chance to win."

Notes

Dickerson, 24, was in uniform for the Rockies Friday but did not play. He leads the PCL in batting average (.386), extra-base hits (41) and total bases (179). He reached base safely for 23 straight games before the call-up. .. Right-hander Logan Kensing, 30, was designated for assignment. . Catcher Joe Gonzalez (No. 43) was promoted from Double-A Tulsa. . Lefty Jeff Francis joined the Sky Sox on Friday. . Former Colorado standout Vinny Castilla will play in Saturday's 7:05 p.m. Heroes Classic celebrity charity softball game. . Because of fire danger, the postgame fireworks display Friday and Saturday were canceled.
