Skiing Colorado: Eldora Mountain Resort

Justin Michael skis the powder at Eldora Mountain Resort, near Nederland.

More than a tourist draw, Eldora is a local spot. "Just say no to I-70," goes the slogan, encouraging Coloradans to let out-of-staters fill the Vails of the world.

East of the Continental Divide, the resort shares the name with the settlement below consisting of cabins and shacks, and the modesty extends up to the base. Most of Colorado's resorts double in terrain size, but Nederland locals and Boulder frequenters just 20 miles away swear by the experience.

Wait times are even shorter since the six-person, high-speed Alpenglow Express opened in 2017, granting people quick turns and vert before or after work. The lift zips up Challenge Mountain, Eldora's outpost for advanced skiers and riders. The confident head to the Corona Bowl, reaching double-black territories of glades, steeps and cliffs. Don't be intimidated: Eldora prides itself for being "THE place to learn in Colorado." The Little Hawk area is lined with gentler groomers.

Many at "Eldo" skip the slopes in favor of the nordic center. The 40 kilometers of trail weave through forests and meadows and offer stunning views of the Indian Peaks.

Skiable terrain: 680 acres

Trails: 53, 17 percent beginner, 45 percent intermediate, 18 percent advanced, 20 percent expert

Lifts: 10

Average annual snowfall: 300 inches

Mountain stats: 10,600-foot summit, 9,360-foot base, 1,240-foot vertical

Check out: New Moon Bakery & Cafe (Nederland), Crosscut Pizzeria and Taphouse (Nederland), Very Nice Brewing Company (Nederland), Rustic Taco and Indian Peaks Bar at resort

Getting there: Off Interstate 25, exit for U.S. 6 west. In Boulder, take Canyon Boulevard (Colorado 119) west to Nederland. Turn left at the roundabout in town and continue south on 119 for 1 mile. Turn right on road 130 and follow signs to resort.
