TELLURIDE — Authorities say a skier has fallen 1,000 feet down a steep slope outside Telluride in southwestern Colorado, suffering severe injuries.

The Denver Post reports the man fell Thursday and was airlifted from the Telluride airport to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. It wasn't immediately clear whether rescuers took him to the Telluride airport by air or on the ground.

The skier's name hasn't been released and the specifics of his injuries weren't available.

San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters says the man was about 12,500 feet above sea level at the time he fell.
