Most siblings separated by more than a decade of difference in age would probably find it hard to forge a close relationship with each other. For Janelle Loes and sister Jaspar Lepak, 14 years her senior, the exact opposite is true.
In fact, the two loaded up a car and are in the middle of a three-week tour, performing 16 shows from their home state of Arizona to all the way north to Minnesota and back again. The adventure brings the siblings to The Loft Music Venue and Theater at 8 p.m. Friday.
The performance will include songs the two have written for their individual acts, but, here, sung in harmony. Loes will accompany some of her sister's songs on violin.
The two have different styles of music, but Lepak thinks it is a nice blend. They describe the sound as "smart pop and heartfelt, folk Americana."
"Janelle's songs tend to be more poppy, and then my songs have a little bit of a country vibe to them, or an Americana vibe," Lepak says. "The variety is really nice."
Lepak and Loes spent little time together as children simply because of the age difference - Lepak turned 33 this month and Janelle is 19.
The two fell in love with music separately. They came up with the idea to collaborate on a tour when they were together this past Christmas.
"I went away to college when Janelle was 4 and it's been really fun to get to know each other as adults in the last couple of years," Lepak says.
Lepak moved to Washington for college and now calls Seattle home. She's been touring for the last year in the area and has been pursuing music as a career for about eight years. Loes is about to begin her sophomore year at Arizona State University and has been performing in Arizona for four years.
"She is mostly performing in Phoenix and Scottsdale, where she went to high school," Lepak says. "She was in Flagstaff for her first year of college but there wasn't enough music, so she's starting at ASU this year and she's booking all kinds of gigs, which is really cool."
The two are excited to be on the road together. The only thing that has kept them from doing so until now was the distance between them. They have performed together before, though. Lepak says her sister visited her and her husband in Seattle in July, where the pair performed several shows. They also played a house show in Arizona last Christmas. Those shows produced valuable feedback that helped them prepare for their current summer tour and possible adventures together down the road.
"We came across a lot of venues in these states that we weren't able to play at this time, so maybe next time," Lepak says. "Hopefully this will be something we do again."
