Few, if any, child stars were more well-known than Shirley Temple. The adorable singer and dancer traveled across the world to entertain and even made a stop in Colorado.

Born on April 23, 1928, in Santa Monica, Calif., she garnered fame as America plunged into the Great Depression. Temple died Tuesday at the age of 85.

According to Beth Davis, an archivist with The Broadmoor hotel, a 10-year-old Temple was on a cross-country trip when she visited the Colorado Springs resort on June 11, 1938.

"She made one trip up Pikes Peak on the cog (railway) and one on the first run of The Broadmoor and Cheyenne Mountain Cog Railroad from the hotel to the zoo," Davis said in an e-mail.

During Temple's trip to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, she met the elephant that had been named after her, Davis said. Temple also was introduced to Spencer Penrose, who had built The Broadmoor two decades earlier.
