Sheriff's Office investigators return to Black Forest area for third arson

Arson investigators with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office were back in familiar territory Saturday to examine a small fire that was intentionally set - the third of its kind near a regional park in Black Forest.

Tri-Lakes Fire crews and sheriff's deputies quickly extinguished a fire that burned an open area about 30-feet by 50-feet Saturday afternoon, sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said.

"At approximately 2:06 p.m., we received a report of a fire in the 16,000 block of Happy Landing Drive," Kramer said. "Arson investigators responded and are conducting an investigation into the incident, which is considered suspicious."

The blaze was set about 1.8 miles north of Fox Run Regional Park, in the same area as two separate fires also considered to be intentionally set July 16, less than a month after the devastating Black Forest fire claimed two lives, burned 14,280 acres and destroyed 488 homes.

The cause of the Black Forest fire remains under investigation, although the sheriff's office said it was human-caused.

"Unfortunately, our investigators don't have any new leads to go on about any of the fires," Kramer said. "We would be eager to accept any tips the public sends our way, we will pursue every single lead."

The Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Protection District handled another minor fire Sunday at Fox Run Regional Park, but firefighters determined the blaze was sparked by hot briquettes thrown in a dumpster and ruled it accidental.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 390-5555.
