Saturday's prep roundup: TCA cruises past Pueblo Centennial in Tri-Peaks tourney

TCA 59, Pueblo Centennial 39

At TCA: Behind Will Ball's double-double, The Classical Academy (11-9) overcame a slow start to beat Pueblo Centennial (6-14) and advance in the 3A Tri-Peaks crossover tournament.

The Titans, who finished fourth in the Tri-Peaks West conference, held Pueblo Centennial to single digits in each of the last three quarters, outscoring the Bulldogs 51-25 over that span.

Ball scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. He also had four blocks.

Davey Haddad added 10 points and eight steals, and Logan Branch chipped in nine points and six rebounds for the Titans.

TCA is back in action Wednesday, traveling to St. Mary's. The Pirates beat the Titans, 80-61 last Dec. 3.


James Irwin 58, Fountain Valley 39

At James Irwin: James Irwin scored 45 points in the second half to rally against Fountain Valley and advance to the second round of the 3A Tri-Peaks tournament.

The game was tied heading to the fourth quarter, when the Jaguars put up 25 points to run away with the win.

Joey Morris led Fountain Valley with 25 points. Phil Fan grabbed 10 rebounds.

No stats were reported for James Irwin, who will play at Manitou Springs on Wednesday.


Peyton 62, Center 51

At Peyton: Peyton (17-2) won its 12th game in a row, ending an eight-game Center (15-4) winning streak in the process.

The Panthers, who led 31-22 at halftime, were ranked No. 6 in last week's 2A poll by The Associated Press.



St. Mary's 44, CSCS 11

At St. Mary's: St. Mary's advanced to the second round of the 3A Tri-Peaks crossover tournament as Olivia Florek scored 11 points and Maggie Hartman added 10 for the Pirates.

Hartman also grabbed seven rebounds, four of them on the offensive end.

The Pirates jumped out to a 13-2 lead after the first quarter. They will travel to Salida on Tuesday.


TCA 36, James Irwin 14

At The Classical Academy: The Classical Academy shut out James Irwin in the first and third quarters, easily cruising into the second round of the 3A Tri-Peaks tournament.

The Titans travel to Trinidad for the second round.
