Switchbacks captain Rony Argueta and midfielder Eddy Prugh both saw a little bit of themselves in the young faces gazing up at them on Thursday.

“It takes me back a little bit to my childhood and brings back some experiences,” said Argueta, who grew up in Costa Mesa, Calif. “It reminds you about always staying humble.”

The two pro soccer players were at the Carver Elementary School Head Start classroom reading a book by Dr. Seuss to about a dozen preschool children as part of the United Soccer League franchise’s continuing community outreach.

RENO, Nev. - Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC scored in stoppage time through Shane Malcolm to claim a 2-2 draw against Reno 1868 FC at Greater Nevada Field on Saturday night, according to uslsoccer.com.

The Switchbacks almost took the lead early as Luke Vercollone put his close-range effort wide of the left post, but it was Reno that created more chances in the first half as both Junior Burgos, Antoine Hoppenot and Mackenzie Pridham had shots saved.

The hosts took the lead in the final minute of the first half from the penalty spot as Burgos converted into the right corner after a hand ball in the area, and although Colorado Springs hit the post moments later through Eddy Prugh's shot from the edge of the penalty area, 1868

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks bounced back from Wednesday's embarrassing road loss with a dominant first half that helped knock the Real Monarchs SLC out of the ranks of the United Soccer League unbeatens.

The Switchbacks (2-1-2) reminded the rest of the USL that they can play the sound, gritty defense that is a staple of a Steve Trittschuh-coached squad in the 2-1 home win.

"It wasn't pretty but we grinded it out," Trittschuh said. "I asked these guys to dig deep. It was a great first half for us and we held on to it. I am really happy about this win."

The Switchbacks opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Masta Kacher fired a bending shot past the outstretched left hand of Real Monarchs goalkeeper Eduardo

Dan Jackson remains grateful for the lessons his adoptive mother Leigh taught him that enabled him to become a 5-foot-9 pro goalkeeper.

"I didn't grow up with a father figure to learn from, but she taught me to have a good work ethic - to keep my head down and just keep working no matter what," the second-year Colorado Springs Switchbacks keeper said. "I knew I had to work five times harder to make up for not having the height of most goalkeepers."

"But most importantly, (the former track and field athlete) was always positive and wasn't critical like some parents can be," he added. "She really enjoyed watching me and my sister (Angie) enjoy sports. She was always there supporting us.

Edinburg, Texas - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fell 3-1 to Rio Grande Valley on the road Wednesday.

A rough first half by the Switchbacks saw them go down 2-0 at the break. RGV was able to dominate the second half despite a 50-50 possession split. RGV found its breakthrough in the 18th minute as a defensive error led Memo Rodriguez to chip the ball over Dan Jackson's head. The Switchbacks would get a handful of chances but ultimately were shut down in the midfield.

RGV was able to double the lead just before the break, as another defensive error led to a goal in the upper left corner to give Rodriguez his second of the match and a 2-0 RGV lead heading into halftime.
