The Colorado Springs Switchbacks lost an opportunity to salvage a point against LA Galaxy II in the final minutes of Friday night's game at Weidner Field.

It's possible they lost a lot more, too, considering the Switchbacks entered having played more games than any other team in the Western Conference.

"It's bad," Switchbacks coach Steve Trittschuh said. "I think a lot of our playoff chances went out the window. It's going to take a lot for us to get back into it."

In the 87th minute, Switchback defender Sean McFarlane redirected a cross past keeper Moise Pouaty and into his own net for the final goal of a 2-1 game.

"There were two points of it that didn't go right because we didn't get pressure to the ball.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC went into Saturday’s game against Real Monarchs on a tear, scoring 10 goals in a three-game win streak. While that run ended in a 2-0 loss in Salt Lake City, the Switchbacks (9-6-4, 33 points) believe they continued to play at a high level heading into Friday’s game against LA Galaxy II (5-12-4) at Weidner Field.

The Switchbacks allowed a pair of goals off set pieces in the first 15 minutes and failed to convert a second-half penalty kick against the Western Conference leaders in Rio Tinto.

“I took a lot of positives out of the game last week,” Switchbacks coach Steve Trittschuh said.

In the 37th minute, the Portland Timbers 2 lined up for a penalty kick. Switchbacks goalie Moise Pouaty took a deep breath and waited for the visiting player to strike the ball.

Block. Pouaty dove to his right and deflected Portland's attempt over the goal to preserve the first-half shutout.

"He is a big lanky guy, so he can get from one side to another," Colorado Springs coach Steve Trittschuh said. "If that goes to 3-1 into halftime, that is a different type of game. But going into half up 3-0, at least we could breathe a little bit. He was big tonight."

All week long, Colorado Springs focused on building momentum. The team then went out and beat the Timbers 2, 4-1, winning back-to-back games before leaving for a

Build momentum. That is the Switchbacks' goal this weekend.

After going winless in four straight games (three losses and one tie), Colorado Springs finally got back into the win column last weekend after defeating the Seattle Sounders FC 2, 2-1. Switchbacks coach Steve Trittschuh hopes his team can build upon that as it prepares to take on the Portland Timbers 2 at 6 p.m. Saturday at Weidner Field.

"It is a must win," Trittschuh said. "I keep preaching that to the guys. All our home games are must wins for the rest of the season. After this game we go on the road for two games. You never know how it is going to go on the road. We have to make sure we get three points."
