Premier Paolo Gentiloni was referring to Veneto Banca and Banca Popolare di Vicenza, each struggling with unpaid loans. The European Central Bank Friday night ruled those banks were "failing or about to fail."

In comments on Italian state radio Saturday, Gentiloni said "the guarantee regarding savers, account-holders, is a guarantee that I feel I can totally confirm."

The government was expected to quickly meet to decide about taking on the deteriorated assets, costing public coffers an estimated 8 billion-10 billion euros (nearly $9 billion-$11 billion).

SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Germany coach Joachim Loew says he has offered Leon Goretzka advice on his club future as the midfielder is linked with a move away from Schalke.

The 22-year-old Goretzka, who has a year remaining on his Schalke contract, has put in strong performances as part of an inexperienced Germany side at the Confederations Cup.

Loew says he's had long conversations with Goretzka about "different possible scenarios" in his career.

Through a translator, Loew says he "wanted to know what (Goretzka) was thinking and what kind of opportunities he envisaged. I certainly spoke my mind."

Loew isn't ready to discuss the details.

SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Perhaps keeping the ball on the ground should be the order from air traffic control rather than coaches in this southern Russian coastal resort.

A FIFA-assigned training ground, used so far by Australia and Cameroon at the Confederations Cup, is directly on the flight path into Sochi's airport.

After passing over the Black Sea, the final kilometer of the descent sees planes roar directly over the pitch before touching down on the runway.

The airplanes can appear deceptively close for players training for the 2018 World Cup warm-up tournament. According to the flight tracking app Plane Finder, aircraft are less than 70 meters off the ground as they drop over the pitch.

LONDON (AP) — The scope of Britain's fire-safety crisis broadened Saturday as London officials scrambled to evacuate four public housing towers due to concerns about fire doors and insulation around gas pipes.

Hundreds of residents hastily packed their bags, with many angry and confused about the chaotic situation. Some refused to leave.

Camden Council said it decided to evacuate the buildings on the Chalcots Estate late Friday after fire inspectors told officials that the blocks were "not safe for people to sleep in overnight." Inspectors uncovered problems with "gas insulation and door stops," which combined with the presence of flammable cladding meant residents had to leave immediately, council leader Georgia Gould said

The four countries presented a 13-point list of demands to Qatar through mediator Kuwait on Thursday and gave it 10 days to comply. Qatar says it is reviewing the ultimatum, which includes demands to shut Al-Jazeera, cut ties with Islamist groups including the Muslim Brotherhood,

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans in full control of government are on the brink of history-making changes to the nation's health care system. The impact for consumers would go well beyond "Obamacare."

Former President Barack Obama's signature law is usually associated with subsidized insurance markets like HealthCare.gov. But the Affordable Care Act also expanded Medicaid.

Not only would the GOP legislation scale back coverage through the insurance markets and phase out the Medicaid expansion, it would also make fundamental changes to the broader Medicaid program. Britain's Press Association reports that dozens of people have refused to leave their homes on a London housing estate, defying efforts by officials to evacuate some apartment blocks due to fire safety concerns.

Camden Council in north London decided that hundreds of residents at the Chalcots Estate had to leave Friday night amid safety fears linked to the deadly inferno that engulfed Grenfell Tower on June 14. The prosecutor would not comment pending further investigation.

SILVERTON, Colo. — The Environmental Protection Agency is studying whether it can close a dam inside a southwestern Colorado mountain to stop the drainage of contaminated mine water into the Animas River.

The manmade dam, or bulkhead, was installed in 2004 at the abandoned Red and Bonita Mine, near the site of the 2015 Gold King Mine disaster that released millions of gallons of toxic wastewater.

Some 300 gallons of toxic water are released each week from the site above the town of Silverton. Closing the dam carries the risk of redirecting toxic flows emerging from the mountain through a maze of abandoned mine shafts or natural seeps and springs, The Denver Post reports (http://dpo.st/2ty2HwO).

It's the elevation, stupid.

OK, D.G. Elmore wasn't quite that blunt and didn't quite rework the classic political phrase, but that was the emphasis in Wednesday's press conference.

The Sky Sox owner made it very clear that altitude was the driving force behind the decision to move the Triple-A team to San Antonio and replace it with a Rookie League team from Helena, Mont.

He likened it to the Sky Sox being a supplier, and the customer - in this case the Milwaukee Brewers - needs their product to be tweaked. At some point, you have to listen to those demands or the relationship will no longer work.

But if the altitude in Colorado Springs is such an issue now, why was the team able to survive for 30 years, and why

To some extent, that clash has already begun. Unprecedented recent U.S. strikes against regime and Iranian-backed militia forces have been intended as warnings to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Tehran that they will not be allowed to confront or impede the Americans and their local proxy forces.

A woman was hit and killed along Interstate 25 late Sunday night.

The Colorado State Patrol investigated an auto-versus-pedestrian crash that happened on southbound I-25 near Mesa Ridge Parkway in Fountain. The deadly crash forced the closure of southbound I-25 at about 9:30 p.m.

State Patrol said 29-year-old Heather deGroot was traveling southbound on I-25 at the same time the victim was crossing the road by the Mesa Ridge Parkway exit (exit 132). After colliding, the Jeep went into the median. No one inside the Jeep was hurt.

I-25 was closed for several hours and reopened before 5 a.m. Monday.
