"We really are sorry," the statement adds.

ETA, which killed more than 800 people including police, politicians and entrepreneurs, will be announcing its final dissolution early next month, Basque regional broadcaster ETB reported this week.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lance Armstrong reached a $5 million settlement with the federal government in a whistleblower lawsuit that could have sought $100 million in damages from the cyclist who was stripped of his record seven Tour de France victories after admitting he used performance-enhancing drugs throughout much of his career.

The deal came as the two sides prepared for a trial that was scheduled to start May 7 in Washington. Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service teammate Floyd Landis filed the original lawsuit in 2010 and is eligible for up to 25 percent of the settlement along with attorney fees paid by Armstrong.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The wife of former Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad is urging women to support the opposition coalition in next month's general election for a better future.

Women account for nearly half of the 14.94 million voters eligible for May 9 polls that will pit Prime Minister Najib Razak's long-ruling coalition against an opposition alliance headed by his former mentor, Mahathir.

Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali said Friday she was initially torn when Mahathir decided to return to politics due to his age but conceded after he said it was "his duty" to save the country. Her 92-year-old husband led Malaysia for 22 years until retiring in 2003.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia's deeply conservative Aceh province on Friday caned several unmarried couples for showing affection in public and two women for prostitution before an enthusiastic audience of hundreds.

The canings were possibly the last to be done before large crowds in Aceh after the province's governor announced earlier this month that the punishments would be moved indoors.

The caning last year of two men for gay sex before a baying mob drew international attention to Aceh's increasingly harsh implementation of Shariah law and a wave of condemnation.

The women accused of prostitution were caned 11 times each. One of the women held up her hand after the fifth lash, signaling the pain was too i

DENVER (AP) — Colorado defenseman Patrik Nemeth set career highs this season in goals, games and perhaps even grudges.

See what a little chip on the shoulder can do?

Waived by Dallas in October, he was claimed by Colorado soon after and has played an integral role in helping the Avalanche return to the postseason. He's not alone: These playoffs are filled with castoffs who were put on waivers, only to find a revamped role with a new team.

It's not personal. It's just business. Players realize this. But still, being waived goodbye is hard to swallow.

"Of course you want to prove them wrong," said Nemeth, whose team trails 3-1 heading to Nashville for Game 5 on Friday night. "You want to prove you can play and tha

TOKYO (AP) — A volcano in southern Japan has erupted for the first time in 250 years, and authorities set up a no-go zone around the mountain.

Mount Io spewed smoke and ash high into the sky Thursday in its first eruption since 1768. Japan's Meteorological Agency on Friday expanded a no-go zone to the entire mountain from previously just around the volcano's crater.

Explosions have briefly subsided Friday, but officials cautioned residents in nearby towns against falling volcanic rocks and ash.

The volcano is part of the Kirishima mountain range on Japan's southern main island of Kyushu. The area is about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) southwest of Tokyo.

Another volcano nearby also erupted violently in March for

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona teachers have voted to walk off the job to demand increased school funding.

The state's largest teacher membership group said Thursday that teachers will walkout April 26.

Arizona jumped into a movement for higher teacher pay that started in West Virginia, where a strike garnered a raise, and spread to Oklahoma, Kentucky and Colorado.

Republican Gov. Doug Ducey has offered a proposal that gives teachers a 20 percent raise by 2020. Many teachers say the plan failed to address much-needed funding for classrooms and support staff.

Parents and communities already have been making plans for child care and food boxes for kids who rely on free breakfast and lunch at school.

Former Discovery Canyon pitcher McKenzie Surface blames herself for not garnering more attention during her college recruiting. Not for what she did on the mound during a dominant four-year stretch for the Thunder, but for failing to anticipate how all her hard work and success could go unnoticed without the right connections.

A junior at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Surface has led the Mavericks to a perfect 34-0 record this season and a spot atop the Division II rankings.
