(AP) — Florida State coach Willie Taggart has completed his coaching staff with the announcement of five new hires on Friday, including an offensive coordinator.

Walt Bell, who has been at Maryland the past two seasons, will be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He held the same position with the Terrapins and also at Arkansas State in 2014 and 2015.

The other additions are Greg Frey (offensive line/run game coordinator), David Kelly (wide receivers/recruiting coordinator), Mark Snyder (defensive ends) and Alonzo Hampton (special teams).

Taggart, who was named the 11th head coach in school history on Dec. 6, retained only one coach from Jimbo Fisher's staff — defensive tackles coach

DENVER (AP) — Devin Booker scored 30 points, T.J. Warren had 25 and the Phoenix Suns defeated the Denver Nuggets 108-100 on Friday night.

Josh Jackson and Isaiah Canaan added 16 points apiece off the bench for Phoenix, which snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Nuggets.

The Suns benefited from an earlier arrival than their last game in Denver. Mechanical issues delayed their flight for the Jan. 3 game until five hours before the opening tip, and the Nuggets raced to a 134-111 win.

The extra night in Denver helped Phoenix to its first win against the Nuggets since Nov. 20, 2015.

Jamal Murray scored 30 in his return to the lineup and Nikola Jokic had 14 points and 17 rebounds for Denver.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Top-ranked Simona Halep saved three match points and finally fended off Lauren Davis 4-6, 6-4, 15-13 in a 3-hour, 45-minute marathon Saturday to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The third set took 2 hours and 22 minutes and, after wasting three previous chances to serve out the match, Halep converted on her first match point when Davis hit a forehand wide.

DETROIT (AP) — John Wall felt the third quarter wasn't much different from the first two.

The Washington Wizards just made more of their open shots.

Wall and the Wizards scored 45 points in the third, and although most of their 20-point lead slipped away in the fourth, they were able to hold on for a 122-112 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night. Bradley Beal and Kelly Oubre Jr. had 26 points each, and Wall added 16 points and 11 assists.

Washington shot 16 of 20 from the field and 6 of 8 from 3-point range in the third.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea has requested North Korea to explain why it abruptly canceled plans to send a delegation over the weekend to prepare for a visit by an art troupe during next month's Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyun on Saturday said that the countries could hopefully reschedule a visit soon.

The ministry says North Korea didn't explain why it was "suspending" the visit by the seven-member advance team. It was supposed to be led by the art troupe's leader Hyon Song Wol. She also heads the hugely popular girl band Moranbong that's hand-picked by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The rival Koreas earlier this week agreed that the 140-member art troupe wil

NEW YORK (AP) — Errol Spence Jr.'s last fight would be the career highlight for many boxers.

Winning a title by going overseas to the champion's hometown and stopping him is tough to top, and even Spence's next opponent was impressed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government careened toward shutdown Friday night in a chaotic close to Donald Trump's first year as president. An eleventh-hour effort to stave off the shutdown for four weeks appeared to fall well short in the Senate, and lawmakers preemptively traded blame as the midnight deadline neared.

Enough senators voted against a stopgap measure to ensure the closure of all but essential operations nationwide. But the Republican-led Senate was holding the vote open as nearly an hour ticked by and the midnight hour neared, seemingly accommodating the numerous discussions among leaders and other lawmakers away from the chamber's floor.

KALAMAZOO, MICH. - Richard Zehnal scored 35 seconds into overtime to give No. 11 Western Michigan a 3-2 victory over Colorado College on Friday night.

Zehnal took a pass from Hugh McGing and placed a backhander past CC goalie Alex Leclerc, who had 40 saves, to make WMU 8-0-1 over the Tigers in Kalamazoo.

The Tigers (9-11-3, 3-8-2-1 NCHC) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead midway through the third period thanks to goals from Trevor Gooch and Troy Conzo. Gooch evened the score at 1-1 with his eighth goal of the season at the 2:15 mark of the final frame on an assist from Branden Makara.

Air Force had fallen behind by eight points in the second half against a team no current Falcon player or coach had beaten. But what Pilipovich saw during a timeout led him to believe they could win.

And they did, 76-71.

"I went to the huddle and they said, 'Coach, we got this,'" Pilipovich said. "They weren't looking down or scared. No, it was, 'We got this.' That gave me confidence. It was awesome."

From that point on, Air Force outscored the Rams 30-17 to leap over a hump that had long tripped them.

Road no longer daunting for Air Force

basketball after second straight win

After a second-straight road victory, Air Force coach Dave Pilipovich offered a suggestion for Saturday.

How about the Falcons travel to Fresno State instead of having the Bulldogs come to Clune Arena?

"Let's get the commissioner on the phone," Pilipovich said.

He was joking, of course, but the road used to be no laughing matter for the Falcons. They hadn't won on the road in the conference since Jan. 28, 2015 before grinding out a 78-71 victory at San Jose State on Saturday.

On Wednesday they won at Colorado State for the first time since 2009, winning 76-71.

The Falcons no longer dread the road.

Here's a look at some of the top high school sports coming up around Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region.

Boys' Basketball 7 p.m. Thursday, Liberty at Rampart

It's a heavyweight bout between two of the best 5A teams in Colorado Springs. The Rams host the Lancers in a conference matchup. Rampart had a strong showing in the holiday classic the school hosted at the World Arena. The Rams dispatched Fruita Monument and Colorado Springs Christian and took Pueblo West down to the wire before losing. The Rams lost Tuesday to Fountain Fort-Carson, suffering their first back-to-back losses of the season. It'll be a tough bounce-back game for them as Liberty is coming off back-to-back wins after ripping off a seven-game win streak earlier. The streak was snapped by Doherty, which stands 10-2 atop the 5A Colorado Springs Metro league.

The Broncos have a problem at quarterback. Kirk Cousins is The Solution.

If the Broncos desire to become relevant in the NFL and the postseason again quickly, the prerequisite is a quantum quarterback leap.

Drafting a quarterback at No. 5 will not accomplish that feat any season soon. Even in the case of The Great Showman Elway, the Broncos didn't win a playoff game, and reach the Super Bowl, until his fourth season in the league.

Based on my research, of the 50 quarterbacks picked in the top five of the draft since the merger, 14 have started in the Super Bowl, and seven have become world champions, six multiple times.

Objectively, 18 of those 50

Soaring Kadets

Air Academy boys' basketball is off to its best start since it won the state championship three years ago.

The Kadets returned from the holiday layoff and beat Discovery Canyon in overtime Wednesday and Sand Creek by a point Friday to improve to 8-3 on the year. Air Academy was 1-22 a season ago.

"At the start of the season we were cautiously optimistic," longtime coach Barry Clark said of the turnaround. "It's kind of what we were hoping for this summer when we saw some of the changes."

The Kadets (8-3, 2-0) trailed by double digits in both games last week only to storm back and execute down the stretch.

Last season the Kadets were out of it more times than not in the final minutes, only

Freshmen defensemen combined for two goals and two assists as Air Force defeated Mercyhurst 5-1 in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game Saturday at the Cadet Ice Arena.

Air Force (9-10-3, 4-8-2 AHC) drew first blood early as Trevor Stone scored his second of the season. Freshman defenseman Jake Levin forced a turnover and Trevor Stone tipped in Levin's pass at 3:47.

Mercyhurst (8-10-2, 5-7-2 AHC) tied the game 42 seconds into the second period. The Falcons then scored twice in 51 seconds for a 3-1 lead. Pierce Pluemer scored his second of the season at 4:15. Just in time for its 20th birthday, The Broadmoor World Arena is celebrating a milestone with perhaps a milestone event.

The historic building has played host to a wide variety of events since opening its doors Jan. 18, 1998, on the city's southwest side, from big-name rock and country concerts to family events and plenty of sports.

Just not high school sports. Not in nearly a decade, anyway.

So when the Rampart Holiday Classic sets up shop on the newly minted Tom Falgien court Thursday, it will do so with a concerted effort to revitalize a missing event from over the years.

"We hope to make this an annual event for us," said Dot Lischick, the venue's general manager.

DENVER - Patrick Mahomes II made both his first NFL start and his first NFL relief appearance a success Sunday, leading the Kansas City Chiefs past the Denver Broncos 27-24 on Harrison Butker's 30-yard field goal as time expired.

Starting in place of Alex Smith, Mahomes handed off a 24-10 lead to No. 3 QB Tyler Bray midway through the fourth quarter but came back with the score tied at 24 and less than three minutes left.

He drove the Chiefs 67 yards in 11 plays for the game-winning field goal that sent the Chiefs (10-6) to their fifth straight win over the Broncos (5-11).

Mahomes became the first quarterback drafted by the Chiefs to win a game for them since Todd Blackledge in 1987. He threw for 284 yards on 24-of-35
