MOSCOW (AP) — American soccer fans: Iceland's prime minister wants your support.

The United States is absent from the World Cup for the first time since 1986, which means up to 325 million Americans are temporarily free agents.

Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir says her island nation about 900 miles (1,450 kilometers) off Norway's coast is the perfect pick for their passion. Iceland is the least-populous country ever at soccer's showcase with just 350,000.

"We can do with more supporters. We absolutely need them," she said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "We've got a lot of support from people around the world. I think a lot of people like the way the Icelandic team played. I think the team spirit

(AP) — Illegal immigration is a key issue for Kansas Republicans as their primary contest for governor grows increasingly contentious.

Secretary of State Kris Kobach is a hardliner who has advised President Donald Trump. He made potential state initiatives against illegal immigration an important theme during a debate Saturday in Salina.

He's trying to unseat Republican Gov. Jeff Colyer in the Aug. 7 primary. Colyer said he supports Trump and believes the U.S. government needs to get illegal immigration under control.

The debate's third major GOP candidate, Insurance Commissioner Ken Selzer, said the first priority is securing the U.S.-Mexico border.

SARANSK, Russia (AP) — If Iran can be the first team to stop Cristiano Ronaldo from scoring at this year's World Cup, the result could be historically significant.

A final score favorable enough to move Iran into the knockout round for the first time also would carry considerable personal meaning for the Asian team's Portuguese coach, Carlos Queiroz, who was once Ronaldo's coach on their country's national team.

Queiroz, who also coached Iran at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, called Monday's game against Portugal "the most interesting and important match in my seven years with Iran."

"People gave us no chance, but we still have chances to qualify for the second round. We'll fight for our dreams," he said.

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia (AP) — Apparently, the England soccer team is described in China as one of those who play "happy football." It's not meant as a compliment.

At the World Cup, a Chinese reporter revealed to England coach Gareth Southgate that the term coined on Chinese social media — and best translated as "happy football" — is in fact used to describe teams or players that make "ridiculous mistakes."

England's history at major soccer tournaments is well-known. A series of dramatic failures, often through penalty shootouts, has meant the country that gave football to the world hasn't managed to add to its one World Cup title in 1966.

Southgate, as he pointed out himself, is "one of the most guilty" when it c

LE CASTELLET, France (AP) — Lewis Hamilton finally got his improved engine and put it to good use on Saturday, streaking away to a record-extending 75th career pole position at Formula One's French Grand Prix.

Hamilton's main challenger for the fastest time at the Paul Ricard Circuit was teammate Valtteri Bottas, who was the second quickest ahead of points leader Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari.

The Mercedes pair is poised for another one-two victory it achieved after starting from the front row in Barcelona last month.

Hamilton called his run "impeccable."

"We have all pulled together and done a great job in putting the car where we need it, for both Valtteri and I," Hamilton said. "You can see how close it is

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Outside a sprawling mall in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, young single men and women walk through an open-air exhibit where Saudi women and traffic police explain the ins and outs of handling a car. Children take a lap around a makeshift course in tiny electric cars as clowns appear on a small stage, dancing for the crowd. A song with a woman's voice blares through the loudspeakers, singing: "I love you Saudia. My love, Saudia."

Just four years ago, this government-sponsored event was an unthinkable scene in the deeply religious and socially conservative country.

ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia (AP) — Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez scored a goal each to move Mexico closer to a spot in the round of 16 by beating South Korea 2-1 Saturday at the World Cup.

Mexico, which upset defending champion Germany in its opening match, took the lead when Vela converted from the penalty spot in the 26th minute. The Mexicans were awarded the penalty after Jang Hyun-soo handled the ball while trying to stop a cross from Andres Guardado.

Hernandez added the second in the 66th, scoring his 50th goal for Mexico. He hit the ball low past goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo after collecting a pass from Hirving Lozano.

PULHEIM, Germany (AP) — Danish golfer Lucas Bjerregaard shot a 5-under 67 to equal the week's lowest round for a six-way share of the lead after the third round of the BMW International Open on Saturday.

Bjerregaard had eight birdies, a double bogey and a bogey to finish on 5-under 211 — jumping 23 places and joining local favorites Martin Kaymer and Maximilian Kieffer, England's Chris Paisley and Aaron Rai, and Australia's Scott Hend at the top of the leaderboard.

Bjerregaard was fortunate to play before the wind picked up again later in the afternoon.

Kaymer, the 2008 champion, delighted the home supporters with two birdies in his last three holes for a 71.

After the sentencing, the Social Democrats reiterated their support for Dragnea, saying he should be considered innocent pending a final verdict. They promised to implement new laws that critics say will weaken the fight against corruption.

More than two dozen Democratic U.S. House members are touring immigration facilities for a firsthand look at the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy.

Speaking to reporters Saturday after visiting a Customs and Border Protection processing facility in the U.S-Mexico border city of McAllen, they described seeing children sleeping behind bars, on concrete floors and under emergency "mylar" heat-resistant blanks.

California Congressman Jackie Speier says, "It is, for all intents and purposes, a prison.

England came into the match on a five-test losing streak but made the most of South Africa's ill-discipline in an error-strewn game that was played in damp conditions.

South Africa led briefly in the second half when Jesse Kriel's try gave it a 10-9 lead, but could not hold on as it gave up too many penalties, 14.

YEKATERINBURG, Russia (AP) — Even a great friendship between players who used to be at the same club has its limits when it comes to the World Cup. Senegal forward Sadio Mane can attest to that.

The African team faces Japan in their second Group H game on Sunday in Yekaterinburg, and a defensive mainstay of the Japanese team is Maya Yoshida with whom Mane once played with for Southampton in the Premier League.

"I know him very well because we played together in Southampton," Mane said through an interpreter Saturday. "We were always together. We were training in the gym together, we were chatting every da. We have an excellent relationship."

Despite what the Earl of Douglas County claims, Queen Latifah, Prince Harry and Jack Sprat have a better chance of playing for the Nuggets than King James.

Sorry, Earl Boykins and Nuggets zealots, LeBron James is not coming to Denver - except, rarely, for an opposing team.

The diminutive Boykins, who played four seasons for the Nuggets, declared on sports talk radio that the NBA's premier player will consider taking his talent a Mile High. "He's gonna look at Denver,'' asserted Boykins, who then put the odds of James joining the Broncos at "35-40 percent.''

Of course, local lackeys leaped on the optimistic "scoop'' and devised means and ways for the Nuggets to attract James. One clown noted that Denver is a good city in

A half mile of pavement is all that separates a few race-car drivers from world records at the Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack.

The popular event, known as the "Super Bowl of half-mile racing," returns to the Colorado Springs Airport this weekend.

The competition, run by Revvolution and Shift-S3ctor, has been a fan favorite since its inception in 2014. Up to 10,000 spectators are expected to watch the 2,640 feet of side-by-side trap speed competition featuring the fastest stock and modified street cars in the world. Trap speed is a vehicle's velocity captured at the end of the run - indicating maximum speed reached.

On the whole, the Rockies, as W. C. Fields advocated, would rather be in Philadelphia than Coors Field.

The Rockies woke up Tuesday morning in Philadelphia closer to last place than first place. They went to bed in worse shape. June is swooning out all over.

The road has been kinder than Home Suet Home.

But the Phillies weren't so benevolent Tuesday night, beating the Rockies, 5-4.

In the seven-game losing streak in LoDo, the Rox were outscored 69-37 by three National League West teams. They own an 11-19 record overall at The Keg and are down among baseball's bottom-feeders in home victories. Instead, Shane Ray is anguishing through another setback.

And the Broncos' sturdiest and deepest position has gotten weaker and thinner by two the past week. It's not a splendid sign.

After Ray couldn't participate in the Broncos' OTA practice Monday with what coach Vance Joseph described as left wrist "irritation,'' the perceived starting outside linebacker could be out again for months.

There are more complications to the same injury - a torn ligament and separated bones in the wrist - he suffered in a routine linebackers-offensive linemen drill on the first day of 2017's training camp.
