NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia (AP) — Sadly for the fans, Belgium and England are ready to rest and rotate.

In it for the long haul, they face a World Cup reality that could strip some of the flavor from a mouthwatering group decider between two Premier League-rich squads and two of the tournament's high-scoring teams.

Both have already qualified for the last 16 — only the group winner needs to be decided — so Thursday's Group G finale in Kaliningrad provides a rare chance in an unrelenting World Cup schedule to rest tired legs, recover from injuries and avoid the risk of suspensions.

Also, fringe squad members can get game time when the pressure is off, in case they are needed unexpectedly when it really counts down the

SOCHI, Russia (AP) — The disappointment Peru felt about being eliminated from the World Cup was nothing compared to the concern about Jefferson Farfan after a scary head injury.

Farfan was knocked unconscious after a hard collision with a teammate during practice on Saturday. On Monday, Peru's players and coach shared their relief that Farfan is recovering.

"It was a scare," coach Ricardo Gareca said. "It was a collision that concerned us. We have to recognize and be grateful for the immediate reaction from our medical staff and for the preparedness of Russia in this situation. He immediately received the attention that he needed so he could recover and be stabilized after being unconscious for a few minutes.

PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A former defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the University of Alabama has been arrested on drug charges in Florida.

KAZAN, Russia (AP) — This Mannschaft is by no means perfect, but at least it can fight, and that's an essential asset to win a World Cup.

Germany's 2-1 win over Sweden could turn out to be the cornerstone in the defending champions' Russian campaign, a memorable event that brought players together following their disastrous start.

After its opening loss to Mexico, Germany got back on track with a stoppage-time winner from Toni Kroos against Sweden, and now needs to finish the job against South Korea to avoid being eliminated in the first round of the World Cup for the first time since 1938.

In a wide-open Group F topped by Mexico with six points, the Germans have their fate in their own hands again.

DENVER (AP) — Derek Dietrich was hoping for a chance at history but settled for a win in a torrid month for the Miami outfielder.

He homered for the third straight game, leading Miami over the Colorado Rockies 8-5 on Sunday.

For decades, those who love The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb wondered if pavement would pollute and maybe even doom the race.

On Sunday, we witnessed the wonder of the pavement. The race is not as distinctive as it was in the Wild West dirt days of yesteryear, but it remains full of life and full of possibility. Limits are being defied and stretched, and that stretching always is exciting.

Romain Dumas sizzled to a 7:57.148 time, smashing his friend Sebastien Loeb’s record 8:13.878 set in 2014. I’ve talked with a couple dozen drivers and fans who believed Loeb’s record would last for a decade. It lasted a mere four years.

Even a draw would be enough on Wednesday for the Swiss in their final Group E match against Costa Rica, which lost its first two games and has already been eliminated.

The real tension revolves around three Swiss players who are being investigated by the governing body FIFA for politically charged hand gestures during a 2-1 victory over Serbia in their last group game. The gestures were intended to mimic a two-headed eagle, which is an Albanian national symbol.

The players are Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri and Swiss captain Stephan Lichtsteiner.

El Tri still may need points to secure a place in the round of 16 for a seventh consecutive World Cup.

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa said there wasn't any panic when he and his teammates learned they had unfinished business in their final game.

The Will Rogers “Shrine of the Sun” carries a sound that you feel, and the first sound you feel is the wind. It whhhhssshes down the eastern slope of this scraggly hillside and seems hellbent on testing the granite mausoleum for signs of weakness after 81 hard years.

DENVER — J.T. Realmuto was focused purely on putting the ball in play with the bases loaded and two strikes on him.

He ended up putting it out of play.

Realmuto hit a grand slam during a five-run seventh inning and the Miami Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 Saturday.

With one out, Realmuto fouled off three pitches against struggling reliever Bryan Shaw before lining an elevated cutter just over the right-field wall. The drive helped Miami stop a three-game skid and ended the Rockies' winning streak at four.

"Early, I felt like I was trying to do a little too much in that at-bat," Realmuto said. "Once I got to two strikes I was really just trying to fight and put the ball in play. That's really it.

DALLAS — The Washington Capitals traded veteran defenseman Brooks Orpik and backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer to the Colorado Avalanche for the 47th pick in the NHL draft Friday, a move that clears salary-cap space for the Stanley Cup champions to re-sign key pending free agents.

Shedding Orpik's $5.5 million salary in the final year of his contract and dealing Grubauer before he earned more as a restricted free agent gives them more than $20 million in cap space. It's needed because defensemen John Carlson and Michal Kempny can become unrestricted free agents July 1 and playoff hero Devante Smith-Pelly and top-line winger Tom Wilson will get raises as RFAs.

Winger Shane Malcolm rewarded those that stayed until the end of Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC’s first home sellout Saturday night against Fresno FC at Weidner Field, a 1-0 victory.
An uneventful draw looked inevitable after 80 minutes.
“The teams lined up pretty similar. We kinda cancelled each other out. Both teams had chances in the first and second half,” Malcolm said. “As the game (went) on, it looked like a 0-0 slugfest, and we were like, ‘We have to find one. We have to find one.’”
After Jordan Burt was fouled roughly 30 yards from goal, Malcolm, captain Josh Suggs and defender Jamal Jack took a minute to discuss the possibilities.
