Colorado Springs Police investigate the scene of a three-vehicle accident at Airport Road and Powers Boulevard where a robbery suspect, who was driving the grey car while being pursued by police, crashed into a truck in the intersection Friday, July 12, 2013. Michael Ciaglo, The Gazette

A major intersection in southeast Colorado Springs was shut down for several hours just before the evening commute Friday after a robbery and police chase that ended in a dramatic crash.

A motorcyclist who was stopped at the intersection of Powers Boulevard and Airport Road was injured in the crash that occurred when a robbery suspect was fleeing police. The motorcyclist was sent to a hospital with serious injuries. He is in stable condition. The suspect, identified as Scott Brown, 34, also was briefly hospitalized and then booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery, among other charges.

Police were alerted after Brown allegedly tried to enter a business on the southwest corner of Academy Boulevard and Chelton Road at about 4 p.m. The quick-thinking business owner, a woman, locked the door before the man could get inside, police spokeswoman Barbara Miller said.

The suspect then ran into a neighboring business, Cash America Pawn, 1891 S. Academy Blvd., and fired a gun, Miller said. It was not known Friday evening if anything had been taken from the shop. No one was injured in the shooting. "When he left there, a vehicle pursuit ensued," Miller said.

The suspect fled from police eastbound on Airport Road in a Hyundai Sonata and slammed into a Toyota truck headed south on Powers. The Toyota hit the motorcyclist, Miller said.
