The rising junior and presumed next quarterback for Pine Creek High School, Gavin Herberg was selected to compete at the Blue-Grey National Super Combine the weekend of July 7.
According to their website, the Blue-Grey Football League helps players of all positions from across the country receive national exposure and increase their chances of securing a college offer. The prospects from 32 states will be competing at the Philadelphia Eagles indoor training complex, the AT&T Stadium home of the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Va., the Daytona Municipal Stadium in Florida and Foothills Sports Arena in Denver, depending on which region they are from.
If players perform well in the Super Combine, they may advance to compete in one of four Blue-Grey All American Bowls. Two of these bowl games will be played at AT&T Stadium, one game will be played at Tampa's Raymond James stadium, and the final one will be played at a site to be determined.
Herberg’s selection was based on his 2016 season as well as his success in the previous Regional Combine held April 15 at the Blue-Grey National Training Center in Denver. During this event, Herberg ran 40 yards in 4.61 seconds and broad jumped 9 feet, 2 inches.
Herberg finished third on Pine Creek's team this year with 175 rushing yards and 148 receiving yards, despite not being a starter. Without having much playing time under his belt, sophomore Herberg came in cold for starting quarterback J.C. Coulter, who was hit hard in the fourth quarter during the 4A state championship game. Herberg managed to run 7 yards into the end zone, giving the Eagles a touchdown with 10:28 remaining. He threw for 47 yards during the final game against Pueblo South.
Herberg was chosen from the Rocky Mountain region and will report to the indoor Foothills Sports Arena in Denver on July 8.
