PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has announced upcoming winter service changes that include trip time alterations, route eliminations and other modifications.

The changes affect more than two dozen public bus and trolley routes throughout Rhode Island. The agency makes seasonal adjustments three times a year, and the winter changes go into effect on Jan. 18.

There will be direct service from Providence to Woonsocket on Route 54 and improved frequency on key corridor routes, including Routes 17, 19 and 20.

Route 79 on Columbus Avenue has been discontinued. Passengers may use Route 80 on Armistice Boulevard for service to Memorial Hospital and Columbus Avenue.

The changes follow a comprehensive system-wide review of transit service throughout the state.
