On Monday, Rampart second-year baseball coach Chris Winstead led his Rams to a convincing win over Doherty in the regular-season finale that clinched a spot in the upcoming 5A district tournament.

One day later, he officially announced his resignation, effective at the end of the season, citing family reasons.

'It's time to get back with family in Oklahoma, ' Winstead said Tuesday. 'My dad is getting older, and I want to help to take care of my brother with Down syndrome down the line. It's family. My daughter was accepted into nursing school at Oklahoma, and my son is interested in going to school there. '

Also, The Vanguard School girls' basketball coach Frank Haist, who led his team to consecutive 2A state tournaments in his two years on the bench, announced his resignation recently.

Haist, previously the boys' coach at The Classical Academy for eight seasons, took the reins for the Coursers prior to the 2011-12 season. An eight-game improvement sent Vanguard to the 2A state tournament for the first time. This past season, Vanguard won 24 of 25 regular-season games en route to a repeat state berth.

'I had a feeling at the beginning of the season that this might be my last year, ' said Haist, whose daughter, two-time all-state point guard Bailey Haist, will graduate from Vanguard later this month. 'I'm not leaving for another coaching gig, other than the club teams I already coach. '

Winstead, 49, a graduate of Oklahoma, previously coached Woodland Park for seven seasons, leading the Panthers to the postseason four times, before taking over at Rampart before the 2012 season.

Last season, the Rams returned to the postseason by winning 13 of 20 games, one year after a dismal 4-15 season.

'Rampart was good for me, and I hope I was a positive for them, ' Winstead said. 'We had a turnaround season, and what I tried to do is to teach them to win. I hope I set up a foundation for the program to keep going. '

On Wednesday, Winstead learned the Rams were placed against Grand Junction at ThunderRidge when the Colorado High School Activities Association released matchups for Saturday's eight district tournaments.
