Black Forest Fire District and Rescue Chief Bob Harvey told board members at a special board meeting Wednesday night that he would be taking a medical leave of absence, effective immediately.

“We don’t know how long the leave will last,” said the district spokeswoman Kathy Russell.

Local television stations including KRDO reported that Harvey said the leave was tied to PTSD.

Harvey led the district during the 2013 Black Forest Fire, which destroyed nearly 500 homes. This winter, he was at the center of a dispute with El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa over his handling of the of that blaze.
