A traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is coming to a Colorado Springs church Thursday and will be on display through the weekend.
The wall carries the names of more than 57,000 troops killed during the Vietnam War and will arrive at Rock Family Church, 4005 Lee Vance View - off Rangewood Drive near Woodmen Road -just before 5 p.m. Thursday, where volunteers will assemble its panels.
Bringing the 360-foot-long memorial to the church is designed as a tribute to the Pikes Peak region's 80,000 veterans and 40,000 active-duty troops, Rock Family associate pastor Mike Keck said.
"We have a lot of military people in our church and in our community," Keck said. "We want to support them and bring it out close to Memorial Day."
The public is welcome to visit the display without charge, and the church plans to have volunteers on hand 24 hours a day through Sunday afternoon when the replica wall will move on.
"We'll have a lot of volunteers if someone needs prayer or just a hug," Keck said. "It definitely brings up a lot of emotions."
At 10 a.m. Saturday, the church plans a ceremony at the wall to recognize troops, veterans and first responders.
