The driver of a black 2002 Chevrolet SUV died minutes after police received several calls Wednesday morning from concerned motorists reporting a reckless driver, Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Heather Cobler said.
Cindy Martinez, 47, from Pueblo, was pronounced dead at the scene after State Patrol said her vehicle struck the median, two signs and a post, then rolled over. Martinez was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected when the SUV overturned, state patrol said.
The fatal one-vehicle rollover crash shut down the northbound left lane of Interstate 25 near exit 122, between Colorado Springs and Pueblo, for more than two hours Wednesday morning.
"Lots of people noticed this person was driving dangerously, but troopers just couldn't get there in time," Cobler said.
The crash, about six miles south of Fountain near the Pikes Peak International Raceway, happened shortly before 6:30 a.m., Cobler said.
Troopers worked to clear up the wreck until 9 a.m., when all lanes of northbound I-25 were reopened to traffic.
