Von Miller had the right idea.
In the middle of the fourth quarter of the Broncos fake game against the Packers, Miller took a break from the irrelevant action to sign autographs.
It was the most meaningful moment in the Broncos 20-17 victory.
Here’s the best news of the night:
Only one more fake game (Thursday night vs. the Cardinals) before the real stuff begins in September.
Three points to ponder from Saturday’s exhibition/fake game:
One – Trevor Siemian
Siemian continues to travel the road to mediocrity. Yes, he’s the best quarterback residing in Colorado. Yes, he defeated Paxton Lynch to retain his starting QB job. Yes, it was impressive and surprising to see a 7th rounder conquer a 1st rounder.
But Siemian now must show he’s a legit NFL starter. He must prove he can direct a team to the playoffs.
In other words, he has much to prove.
He was horrendous early against the Packers, completing only 3 of his first 9 passes. Well, he actually completed 4 of his first 9. Problem was, one of those completions was to the Packers in the form of an interception.
He recovered to complete 10 of his final 13 passes, but he was, at best, mediocre, finishing with a 56.4 QB rating.
Is Siemian ready to take the required leap?
It would be bold – too bold – to even answer maybe.
Two – C.J. Anderson
Anderson has talked boldly this month about his plans to deliver a big season. This big season would be the first big season of Anderson’s career, which has been more about the potential of big things than the actual delivery of those big things.
Anderson busted loose for a 16-yard run against the Packers. That’s the encouraging news.
He gained 15 yards on his other eight carries. The Broncos desperately need Anderson to lead a revived running game.
It remains unclear if Anderson is ready to deliver on his promises.
Three – Broncos are undefeated in exhibition (fake) games
Sorry, but I’m not expecting a parade through downtown Denver.
But, hey, there was one special moment.
The best moment from Saturday night arrived when Von met with his fans. He showed genuine kindness in the final stretch of a fake game.
