Gazette Premium Content Ramblin' Man: Gasoline cost? Be glad you're not in Norway

by name Newspaper - Published: September 20, 2013

On a global level, Americans don't feel the worst pain at the pump, and Coloradans fare better than many in the United States.

In Norway, drivers pay a whopping $10 for a gallon of gasoline.

A 14-gallon fill-up there runs $140. Good thing it's a small country, about the size of New Mexico.

It does have one of the best roads in the world, though, called The Atlantic Road.

In Venezuela, the price is 4 cents a gallon, according to Bloomberg. Really.

By comparison, on Tuesday Americans reached a milestone.

They paid more than $3 a gallon for gasoline for 1,000 consecutive days, according to AAA. It's the new baseline, AAA says. The price for a gallon of gasoline in the future will never fall below that price.

On Thursday, the national average for a gallon of gasoline was $3.52, according to gasbuddy.com, which tracks gasoline prices nationwide. The cheapest was $3.14 in South Carolina.

The most expensive was Hawaii at $4.269.

In Colorado, we paid $3.511 a gallon, a smidgen below the national average. In the Springs the average was lower still at $3.456.

In Denver, drivers were paying $3.478 a gallon and in Fort Collins, the price was $3.497.

If you really gotta know, Bloomberg.com has a great gas price ranking worldwide that includes what it calls "pain at the pump," which measures the percentage of average daily income needed to buy a gallon of fuel. It's like watching a horror movie.

In America, it's 2.6 percent of daily wages for a gallon of gas and 3.18 of annual incomes for a year's worth of fuel.

We pay more for a gallon of gasoline than Russians, Iranians, Saudi Arabians, Pakistanis, Malaysians and Slovakians, among others.

We pay less than Italians, Swedes, Germans, the Irish, Japanese, Brazilians and Estonians.

We're 50th on a list of 61 countries, where 61 pays the least (Venezuela.)

Saudi Arabians pay 45 cents a gallon. They pay 80 cents a gallon in Kuwait and $1 in Egypt.

Your weapon, should you choose to fight back, is gasbuddy.

It may be worth the search for lower gas prices. For instance, in central Colorado Springs, gas could be had at Everyday at 1823 N Circle Drive for $3.36 a gallon, gasbuddy said Thursday night. Gas was $3.42 at 7-Eleven, 7692 Barnes Rd. near Marksheffel Road. It was $3.39 at Corner, 2715 W. Colorado Ave.

Several pennies here. A bucket of pennies there.

You'll never match Venezuela.

But Russia, to be sure, at $3.39 or Iran, $2.16.
