PUEBLO — Stephen J. Berg has been ordained as the new Roman Catholic bishop of Pueblo.

Berg said he forgot his prepared remarks and had to speak off-the-cuff Thursday to about 1,500 people at Pueblo's Memorial Hall after his ordination.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports (http://bit.ly/1eGQkON) that Berg promised the priests of the sprawling diocese that he will work closely beside them.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the papal ambassador to the United States, attended the ceremony.

Berg is a native of Miles City, Mont. He earned degrees in music from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, N.M., and taught music at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth.

He was ordained as a priest in 1999 and served in Fort Worth, Texas, before moving to Pueblo.
