The Associated Press Published: December 17, 2013

GRAND JUNCTION — A man shot and killed during a standoff with Mesa County deputies over the weekend was wanted for escaping from a Pueblo halfway house.

Forty-nine-year-old Lawrence Sanchez was reportedly armed with a rifle and standing behind a tree when he was shot Saturday afternoon.

State corrections department spokesman Roger Hudson told The Daily Sentinel (http://bit.ly/19QfVn1 ) that the department had tracked him to Mesa County.

He said Sanchez had been paroled from the state prison system six times since 1983 for convictions of crimes including burglary and eluding police. He was released to the halfway house in January and walked away in September.

Two deputies are on paid leave as the shooting is investigated.
