Fire crews were expected to make progress in containing the 495-acre Eightmile Fire in eastern Fremont County through Sunday night and into Monday despite red flag weather conditions, according to Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team B Commander Dan Dallas.

The lightning-sparked widlfire burning near Phantom Canyon Road, between Penrose and Canon City, remained 10 percent contained, Dallas said at a press briefing Sunday.

No structures were immediately threatened, but 16 homes in the Red Rocks subdivision were on pre-evacuation notification status, alerting residents that they should be ready to leave if the fire's behavior changed unexpectedly, Dallas said.

"There has been a change in the containment, but we won't tally up the progress until Monday morning," said Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team spokesman John Peterson. "The fire crews are out right now and fighting the blaze in full force."

About 230 firefighters continued to construct and strengthen containment lines on the northeast and southwest portions of the blaze, Dallas said. They are looking for safe access to the southeast perimeter.

Businesses in the 8 Mile Hill area west of Canon City were not affected by the fire, including whitewater rafting tours on the Arkansas River, according to Fremont County officials.

Nearly eight miles of Phantom Canyon Road, off Fremont County Road 123, remained closed Sunday.

A red flag warning remained in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday for Chaffee, Fremont and Teller counties due to high temperatures nearing 100 degrees, winds gusting up to 35 mph and relative humidity levels below 10 percent, the National Weather Service said.
