Prescribed burn planned in New River Gorge

GLEN JEAN, W.Va. (AP) — A prescribed burn is scheduled this week in the New River Gorge National River.

The National Park Service says about 17 acres will be burned at Backus Mountain in southeastern Fayette County sometime between Wednesday and Saturday, depending on weather conditions. The burn is expected to last four to five hours.

The park service plans to monitor the area after the burn to determine whether prescribed fire promotes the growth of young oak seedlings.
