Gazette Preps high school sports rankings: League title matchups influence this week's rankings

This is the final week of the regular season for baseball, lacrosse and soccer.

With that in mind, here's a look at the Pikes Peak region rankings heading into the last regular-season week of play as teams jockey for playoff position and bragging rights in the week of May 1-7.

 

BASEBALL

BREAKDOWN: Pine Creek exited Monday's showdown with Fountain-Fort Carson with a 31/2-game lead on the Trojans after a 9-1 victory. The Eagles locked up the league championship. The Trojans host the Eagles Tuesday but it won't affect the league crown. . ... Air Academy goes from unranked to No. 1 after sweeping Cheyenne Mountain, which swept Falcon, which swept Air Academy. If the Kadets can close the season with wins over Discovery Canyon and two against Lewis-Palmer, they will be 5A/4A PPAC champs. Meanwhile, Cañon City closes the regular season with four games in six days starting Monday. The big one is Tuesday's game at Mesa Ridge, with both the Grizzlies and Tigers unbeaten in 4A CSML play. ... Peyton is four games away from heading into the postseason with a perfect record and as the possible No. 1 seed in 2A. Manitou Springs travels to St. Mary's on Tuesday.

 

BOYS' LACROSSE

1. Lewis-Palmer 11-1 No. 1

2. Cheyenne Mountain 9-3 No. 2

3. Air Academy 8-4 No. 3

BREAKDOWN: Late Monday night, Lewis-Palmer was battling with Columbine for control of the 5A Jeffco League crown. Check out GazettePreps.com for a recap of that game. On Friday, Air Academy hosts Cheyenne Mountain in what will likely be the game for the 4A Southern League title.

 

GIRLS' LACROSSE

1. Air Academy 8-2 No. 1

2. Palmer Ridge 9-4 No. 2

3. Pine Creek 10-4 NR

BREAKDOWN: Air Academy is the only team unbeaten in Southern League play. With just two league games left to play, the Kadets are in the driver's seat for the conference title.

BREAKDOWN: Our 5A rankings reflect the 5A CSML standings, as all three teams atop the 5A CSML are tied at 4-1 in league play. League play concludes this week, with the top two guaranteed playoff berths. ... On its way to clinching the 4A CSML title, TCA outscored league opponents 70-3. The Titans still have one more league opponent before facing Valor Christian to prep for playoffs. Defending state champ Lewis-Palmer is undefeated in 5A/4A PPAC play with one game remaining in league play. ... Class 2A Fountain Valley is at 3A Manitou Springs on Tuesday. Both Manitou and St. Mary's are champions of their respective 3A leagues.
