Prep roundup: Coronado edges Doherty in boys' tennis

BOYS' TENNIS

Coronado 4, Doherty 3

At Doherty: Coronado swept the doubles matches to top Doherty in boys' tennis on Tuesday.

Coronado's No. 4 doubles team of Brayden Mesiter and Trevor Rather pulled out a three-set victory over Chase Tirey and Jake Loveless, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to help the Cougars lock up the win.

All three other doubles pairs for Coronado won in straight sets, including No. 2 Dimas Gutierrez and Mark Landolfi powering past Andrew Johnston and Tyler Bistline 6-3, 6-1.

The Spartans won all three singles matches, as No. 1 senior Noah Jones defeated freshman Spenser Furgerson 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Doherty's No. 3 singles Jesse Hollmann won his debut at singles, beating Josh Dorado 7-5, 6-2.

SOFTBALL

Douglas County 13, Palmer 0

At Palmer: Eight of 10 Douglas County players to bat scored at least one run, as the Huskies (1-0) routed Palmer in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Jenny Trapp went 4-for-4, scored three times and drove in a run, and Clara Larson drove in three runs and scored three times, while going 3-for-4 at the plate.

Breanna Corell held Palmer (0-1) to one hit.

Rampart 16, Sand Creek 2

At Sand Creek: Kara Jones doubled, tripled and drove in four runs for the Rams, while Kaesha Harper went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs.

Rampart (1-0) scored four in the first, three in the second and five in the third to jump out to an insurmountable lead, as the Rams opened the season with a win.

Amanda Londo doubled and drove in two. Madison Gerchow scored a game-high three runs for the Rams.

Alyssa McDowell (1-0) struck out five, yielded four hits and two runs - both earned - to notch the win.

The Rams tacked on four runs to end the game in five innings.

Sand Creek (0-1) scored runs in the third and fourth innings. Rebecca Harris doubled in a run, and Mary Jackson drove in the other for the Scorpions.

Florence 21, Gunnison 1

Gunnison 8, Florence 5

At Gunnison: Florence (1-1) cruised to a four-inning win when the Huskies scored 11 runs in the fourth to blow out Gunnison 21-1 in a doubleheader split with Gunnison (1-1).

Gunnison won the other game of the doubleheader by jumping out to an 8-2 lead and then holding off a Florence rally.
