Highlights from Thursday's high school sports scene across the Pikes Peak region
Palmer 4, Sand Creek 0
At Sand Creek: Palmer (2-1) picked up its second win of the season, while Sand Creek (0-2) continues to look for its first. The Terrors scored all four runs in the first four innings and held on to the lead in nonconference action.
Terrors senior Samantha Archuleta had a steady afternoon at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs and scoring twice. Senior Susan Bolinger and freshman Kendall Nussbaum each went 2 for 3. Nussbaum had an RBI.
Scorpions senior Briana Daniels connected on both her at-bats, accounting for two of the teams' four hits against the Terrors. Junior Kelsey Lowry and freshman Ariel Cowan each went 1 of 2.
On the mound, Cowan fell into the loss column after giving up seven hits, including a double. She booked three strikeouts.
For Palmer, senior Kara Flores threw four innings and notched seven K’s. She held the Sand Creek offense to three hits.
The Terrors next face Chaparral (1-1) at home on Friday. Sand Creek travels to Woodland Park on Friday and plays host to Coronado on Saturday.
Doherty 14, Mesa Ridge 3
At Doherty: Doherty (1-0) opened the season with a double-digit ending after five innings against Mesa Ridge (0-3) after putting up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning alone.
Spartans senior Emma Chesire gleamed at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and the game's only home run, scoring four times and driving in five RBIs. Sophomore Mackenzie Dixon also went 3 for 4 and connected for a two-base hit. She crossed home once and drove in two others. Doherty had 12 hits total.
Grizzlies junior Megan Morgan went 2 for 3, scoring once, while freshmen Cassie Reed and Haley Fox, both 1 for 2, each doubled.
From the mound, Spartans senior Breanna Brettschneider pitched all five innings and booked five strikeouts while yielding just a single earned run.
Doherty next faces Heritage on Saturday in Litteton, while Mesa Ridge heads south to play Pueblo East the same day.
