Outlook: A season ago the Spartans qualified five swimmers for the state meet and look to continue that success this season with a strong incoming freshman class, according to Barry. After qualifying one relay last year, Barry hopes that the Spartans can qualify at least three for the state meet.

Notes: The Terrors have won CHSAA's Les Schwab Academic Team Championship award each of the past two years.

Coach: Alan Arata (14th season)

Returning athletes: Faith McAllister, sr., butterfly/IM/freestyle; Kayla McClelland, sr., IM/breaststroke; Kailee Sunada, sr., freestyle; Ashlyn Foster, jr., diving; Anna Kemper, jr., diving; Meredith Rees, jr., freestyle/backstroke/butterfly; Madeline Bane, so., freestyle/IM; Hannah Day, so., breaststroke/sprints; Natalie Wright, jr., diving

"We think we have the best diving team that has ever been put together in this state," Arata said is a preseason questionnaire. "Our focus this year is to silence the negative voice in our heads, while encouraging the voice that gives us courage to be our best. It's the holy grail of performance that is often left unworked."

Notes: Each of the returning athletes were 5A state qualifiers last season.

Class 4A

Cheyenne Mountain

They return many swimmers from last season's team, including Wright, who was a part of the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay teams that won the state title. She also earned an individual championship in the 100 butterfly. Coach Doane said she is looking forward to "coaching this great group of young athletes who enjoy the team comaraderie, intense training and competing together as Lady Indians." Expect the Indians to be strong contenders again this year.

Notes: Doane is also the coach of the boys' team that won the 4A title the past three seasons.

Returning athletes: Chloe Cassens, sr.; Lindsey Murray, sr.; Abby Smith, sr.; Mia Shaeffer, jr., 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley

Outlook: A season ago, Coronado placed 22nd at the 4A state swimming meet. This year expectations are high as the Cougars hope to qualify at least 10 swimmers to state along with at least one diver. Baker said in a preseason questionnaire to The Gazette that this year's freshman class is the best she has seen in her eight seasons at Coronado.

Returning athletes: Reagan Clark, sr.; Sarah Gaines, sr.; Becca Miller, sr.; Gabi Roehr, sr.; Allison Van Milligan, sr.; Kate Carlson, jr.; Paetyn Relich, jr.; Grace McCrary, so.

Outlook: The Danes finished 18th at state a season ago. Gustke said the Danes are a young team this year, with their strength being their divers and the amount of depth they have in nearly all events.

Returning athletes: Madeline Butts, sr., diving; Kaitlyn Davidson, sr.; Jaycie Kaltenbacher, sr.; Sage Stevens, sr., 100 butterfly; Molly Arndt, jr., 50 freestyle; Kaitlyn Cashdollar, jr., 100 backstroke/100 butterfly; Sydney Dolloff-Holt, jr., 100 breaststroke/100 butterfly/50 freestyle; Ava Keller, so., 100 backstroke; Julianna Rizo, so.; Coco Stevens, so., 50 and 100 freestyle

Chaney said the team is young this year, but "so far they look like quality swimmers and are very motivated." Chaney also said he thinks the team has more depth and may even be stronger than last year with the return of state swimmers Dolloff-Holt, Coco Stevens, Cashdollar and Sage Stevens.

St. Mary's

Coach: Brigid Webb (first season)

Returning athletes: Haley Bohannon, sr.; Retta Smith, sr., diving; Grace Arnold, jr.; Caitlin Cairns, so., 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke

Outlook: A season ago the Pirates finished eighth as a team at the state's inaugural 3A meet for girls' swimming. While St. Mary's may be a small team, Webb said that the team has "a lot of heart." The Pirates aim to get two relay teams back to state.

Notes: Senior Haley Bohannon is returning this season after undergoing surgery on her rib cage last year. Sophomore Caitlin Cairns is training for her Junior National cut, according to Webb.
