A look at the top games for high school football in Week 2

TOP GAMES OF WEEK 2

Thursday

EAGLECREST (1-0) at DOHERTY (1-0)

When, Where: 7 p.m., Garry Berry Stadium

Last year: Eaglecrest beat Doherty 56-0 at Legacy Stadium

The skinny: Is Doherty for real? The Spartans won their first season opener since 2006 on Aug. 30 with a 49-7 win over Liberty, rolling up 493 total yards in the process, 246 from running back Zach Young. Now, it's Eaglecrest, which didn't allow Doherty to cross midfield in last year's meeting and reached the quarterfinals of the 5A state playoffs. Last week, the vaulted Raptors defense allowed only 8 rushing yards in a 35-0 win over Denver East.

Friday

KENT DENVER (0-1) at FLORENCE (1-0)

When, Where: 7 p.m., Florence High School

Last year: Kent Denver beat Florence 42-16 in a 2A state semifinal and 41-6 during the regular season. Both were played in Englewood.

The skinny: It's a meeting of the past 2A state champions, with both beating each other en route to the crown. Last November, Jaden Franklin rushed for 319 yards and five TDs as the Sun Devils exacted revenge and went 13-0. Last week, however, they lost to Platte Valley in a rematch of last year's state championship game. Florence, led by first-year coach Jeremy Nix, didn't miss a beat in thumping The Academy, 47-14. Kent Denver hasn't started 0-2 since 2007.

PALMER RIDGE (0-1) at VISTA RIDGE (0-1)

When, Where: 7 p.m., Vista Ridge High School

Last year: Vista Ridge recorded a 20-0 shutout over the Bears

The skinny: Montrose dealt both squads season-opening losses, beating Vista Ridge, 47-22 in Zero Week, then traveling east to hand Palmer Ridge a 48-7 defeat Aug. 31. Both teams had trouble taking care of the football. Vista Ridge turned it over four times, including two in the red zone, while Palmer Ridge tossed two interceptions and lost three fumbles. Vista Ridge went 10-2 last year and reached the second round of the 4A playoffs, while Palmer Ridge, a 3A playoff team in 2011, has struggled since moving up, dropping nine of 11 games.

PUEBLO WEST (1-0) at RAMPART (1-0)

When, Where: 7 p.m., District 20 Stadium

Last year: Pueblo West rolled to a 49-13 victory

The skinny: Is Rampart for real? On Aug. 31, the Rams aired it out to beat Canon City, 44-30 behind five TD passes from new QB Cameron Hacker. On Friday, a battle-tested Pueblo West team that reached the 4A semifinals last season comes to town. The Cyclones, however, don't have 3,343-yard rusher Derek Jackson anymore. They do, however, have QB Zac Drury and RB Kamron Clough, who combined for 260 yards rushing in last week's 28-0 win over Pueblo County.

Saturday

HARRISON (0-1) at CORONADO (2-0)

When, Where: 1 p.m., Garry Berry Stadium

Last year: Coronado defeated Harrison, 20-6

The skinny: The Cougars, winless in 2011, then had a five-game turnaround last season, continue to impress. In its last game against TCA on Aug. 29, Coronado pounded out 280 rushing yards and possessed the ball for nearly 35 minutes. Three red-zone turnovers prevented a rout. Harrison was outscored 13-0 in the second half against Sterling in a 21-12 season-opening loss Aug. 30. Senior Demetrius Graves rushed for 102 yards to pace the Panthers.
