Police recover items stolen from Black Forest fire victims

Colorado Springs police confirmed stolen items belonging to Black Forest fire evacuees were recovered during the execution of a search warrant at American Storage Facility Monday.

According to police, a unit was reported as suspicious by the managers of the storage facility, located at 6740 Vincent Dr., south of Woodmen Road, around 5:45 p.m.

Officers secured the scene and obtained a search warrant for the storage unit, locating evidence that police said will be used in an ongoing investigation.

Barbara Miller, CSPD spokeswoman, said no arrests have been made.

"Investigators wanted to do a thorough search of all the property recovered to try and identify the victims in the hopes of returning their property to them," Miller said.

District Attorney Dan May and El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa issued warnings about looters in the wake of the Black Forest fire last month, promising anyone found guilty would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
