A routine traffic stop turned into a full-blown investigation when police said they discovered a bounty of stolen drivers' licenses, Social Security cards, financial documents and a mailbox.
David McKinley, of Colorado Springs, was taken into custody on suspicion of identity theft and burglary, among other charges, police said.
Patrol officers stopped a truck around 1:26 a.m. Thursday near the Interstate 25 and Fontanero Street intersection for allegedly speeding and said they identified the driver as a habitual traffic offender.
After arresting McKinley, police searched the vehicle and allegedly found drug paraphernalia, numerous IDs and drivers' licenses, forged documents and financial statements, Social Security cards and even a mailbox stolen north of Pueblo, police said.
U.S. Postal inspectors were at the scene to recover the stolen mailbox and to assist in the investigation.
Colorado Springs police said the case is active and ongoing.
